On 8 March 2024, a Smart Aviation Pilatus PC-6 aircraft crashed while flying to Binuang Airport at around 09:00 WITA (UTC+8) from Juwata Airport, Tarakan with its final destination being Robert Atty Bessing Airport in Malinau.

At the time of the accident, the Smart Aviation aircraft with registration PK-SNE was only carrying two crew members, namely a pilot and a technician. The aircraft was carrying 583 kilograms of food supplies.[5]

Airplane

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Smart Aviation Pilatus PC-6, registered as PK-SNE.

Route

On March 8, 2024, the Smart Aviation PK-SNE aircraft operated a pioneer cargo flight with an initial route from Juwata Airport in Tarakan to Binuang Airport in Krayan Tengah, Nunukan and continuing to its final destination at Robert Atty Bessing Airport in Malinau.

The aircraft took off from Juwata Airport at 08:25 WITA and was scheduled to arrive at Binuang Airport at 09:25 WITA.[6]

Occupants

At the time of the incident, the aircraft was only manned by two crew members and no passengers. The aircraft was piloted by Captain M. Yusuf and accompanied by Engineer on Board Deni S.[citation needed]

Rescue efforts

A joint team of Central-South Krayan Police personnel, Indonesian soldiers, and local residents immediately conducted a search using trail bikes towards the location where the plane was estimated to have crashed.[7]

The Ministry of Transportation received a report of the loss of the aircraft at 11:25 WITA and coordinated with the National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) to conduct a search using two PC-6 aircraft from Smart Aviation with registration PK-SNG and Susi Air's PK-VVU.[8]

Search and rescue teams were dispatched from the afternoon of March 8 until it was temporarily stopped at 19.00 WITA due to the darkness and the need for search aircraft to refuel in Malinau.[9]

BASARNAS deployed three search and rescue aircraft from Air Squadron 5 of Sultan Hasanuddin Air Force Base in Maros, South Sulawesi, namely two Boeing 737-200s and one Caracal Helicopter.[10]

Discovery and evacuation

On March 9, officers conducting the search using a helicopter found the aircraft's debris and smoke from a campfire that was thought to have come from survivors not far from the crash site.[11]

On March 10, SAR team officers managed to reach the location of the plane crash and found that Captain M. Yusuf was still alive and injured while Engineer Dani died.[12]

The victim was then evacuated using a Caracal helicopter and taken to Jusuf SK Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Tarakan.[13]
