"IPartment 5" is the fifth and final season of the mainland Chinese urban romantic sitcom Love Apartment. Directed by Wei Zheng, the scriptwriter was changed from Wang Yuan to Wei Zheng and Zou Jie. The actors are Lou Yixiao, Li Jiahang, Sun Yizhou, Li Jinming, starring Zhang Yiduo, Cheng Guo, and Wan Zilin, with special appearances by Chen He and Zhao Wenqi.[1]

"IPartment 5" started filming and production on April 11, 2019, and officially finished on August 24 of the same year.[2][3][4]

According to the plot setting, some titles of this season are different from the usual ones: the titles of the 15th episode[10] "Ultimate Survival Test" and the 31st episode "Simulated Family" Zhao Haitang's self-imagined titles, the introduction and photos of the main characters are all replaced by Haitang x Dali (similar to In the 21st episode of the fourth season, Hu Yifei's Nolan apartment); in the 34th episode "Laughter in the Heart", after learning that the apartment is about to be demolished, the opening title changes to a cool tone, and the title song becomes "The Lonely Corner" sung by director Wei Zheng ", and Chen He (Zeng Xiaoxian) appeared in the leading role, not a special performance; the 35th episode "WeChat War" has no regular title, only the episode name and the approval number of the radio and television.[11]

All 13 leading actors from all five seasons are listed in the credits after the finale of Episode 36, "Finally Married".[12]

Episode 13, "Pop-Up Space", is the first interactive episode in five seasons, where viewers choose different pop-ups that will correspond to different episodes.[13]

In episode 20, "The Best Gift", after Zhao Haitang and Curry Paste have a drink together on Valentine's Day, there is a scene where Curry Paste falls asleep on Zhao Haitang's shoulder;[14] and in episode 24, "The Best Gift", there is a scene where Zhao Haitang, who was stuck in a delivery port when Chen Meijia's baby was born, finally gets out and shouts "I'm finally out! " Although the scene was not aired in the main film, the cut footage from episode 24 appeared at the end of the set clip released by director Wei Zheng after the end of the film, which some netizens speculated was a teaser for the new film to follow.[15]

Anecdote

  • Due to the work schedule, Chen He (Zeng Xiaoxian) has reduced roles, only for the special appearance of this season.[18]
  • The actor Li Sheng who played the role of Zhuge Dasheng is actually the spouse of Li Jiahang (Zhang Wei).
  • Some of the leading actors in the previous four seasons did not participate in the show, including Wang Chuanjun (Guan Guwei), Jin Shijia (Lu Zhanbo), Zhao Ji (Lin Wanyu) and Deng Jiajia (Tang Youyou).[19]
  • The actor who played the big brother in the previous four seasons was replaced by Du Jun and Wang Yunfan this season.[20]
  • The youngest protagonist in the drama is the only post-00s Zhuge Dali, but in fact the results of the cast are not post-00s; the youngest lead actor is Wan Seilin, who plays Curry Sauce.

Evaluation and Controversy

Douban score

After its launch, IPartment 5 has a rating of 4.6 out of 10 on Douban, making it the lowest rating in the history of the IPartment 5 TV series, while the previous four Love Apartments TV series have all scored above 7 on Douban, and even the extras have scored above 6. However, as the drama progresses, the audience's praise for the episodes increases and they can gradually understand the director's original intention for the musical and other new forms. The Douban rating has risen slightly. By mid-February 2020, the Douban rating for Season 5 had risen back to 6.7, and by early June, it had risen to 7.0 points.[21][22]

Launch scene blocks

IPartment series TV series were once accused of plagiarizing the American sitcom "Friends". In 2019, "Friends" and Lego jointly launched the 25th anniversary building blocks of "Friends"[23]，And iPartment 5 launched a commemorative building block, which is the same as the 25th anniversary building block of "Friends".[24][25]

Props sketches suspected of plagiarism

After the broadcast of "IPartment 5", some netizens pointed out that the 39 minutes and 20 seconds hand-painted manuscript in the 8th episode Speak Well and the video Old Tomato Teach You submitted by the well-known Bilibili UP host "Old Tomato" in 2017 The works appearing in Becoming a Soul Painter (Part 1 are similar,[25][26] The crew of IPartment 5 apologized on Weibo, and made corrections to the relevant clips on January 15, 2020, and went live.[27][28]

IPartmen5 has received mixed reviews, but the show has made a lot of new attempts to get a better broadcast, not only by injecting a lot of new blood, but also by innovating the broadcast format. There were a number of Broadway-style "songs and dances + lines" and a lot of location filming, which was rarely seen in previous episodes of Love Actually. At the same time, the series has been plagiarised in a way that has not gone unnoticed.[29]
