Tillu Square (stylised as Tillu²) is a 2024 Indian Telugu-language romantic crime comedy film directed by Mallik Ram and produced by Suryadevara Naga Vamsi under the banner of Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas. It is the sequel to the 2022 film DJ Tillu. Siddhu Jonnalagadda reprises his role in the previous film, while Anupama Parameswaran plays the female lead.[2]

The film was officially announced in June 2022 by Naga Vamsi and principal photography began in August 2022.[3] Ram Miriyala and Sricharan Pakala serve as the music directors, while the cinematography and editing are handled by Sai Prakash Ummadisingu and Naveen Nooli.

Tillu Square has seen multiple postponements in its release due to post-production issues.[4] It was scheduled for a worldwide release on 9 February 2024, but was postponed to accommodate Eagle from a five-way Sankranti clash.[5] It was later theatrically released on 29 March 2024 after several delays.

Plot

After Tillu runs away with Shannon's money,[N 1] Tillu owns an events company named Tillu Events, where he organizes and DJs for events, including weddings and parties. At one party, he meets Lilly Joseph and has a one-night stand with her. She disappears in the morning, leaving only a note, which disappoints Tillu, who had started to develop feelings for her.

After a month of searching for Lilly, Tillu finds her at a hospital following his dad's colonoscopy. She reveals that she is pregnant with Tillu's child, and they plan to marry. On Tillu's birthday, Lilly brings Tillu to an apartment, which he recognizes as the apartment where Radhika had brought him previously. She reveals that she is looking for her missing brother, Rohit, who Radhika killed a year prior.

Some time later, while looking for clues about Rohit with Lilly and Purshotram, Tillu while trying to escape is kidnapped by Shannon. He is rescued by Lilly, who kills Shannon's men. She reveals that she is not really pregnant or Rohit's sister and is instead a secret Indian Special Forces agent assigned to kill Sheikh Mehboob. She has been tricking Tillu, who was invited to DJ at Mehboob's party in Hyderabad. She and her team have been attempting to kill Mehboob for several years, but he always avoids them with the help of an anonymous informant on Lilly’s team. She blackmails him with a video of him and Radhika burying Rohit in order to get him to kill Mehboob at his party using poisoned sweets. Later, Lilly tells Tillu that she did genuinely have feelings for him even though she tricked him.

On the day of Mehboob's party, Tillu attempts to leave Hyderabad with his family to escape Lilly, but she catches up to him and stops him. She brings Radhika, now engaged, and threatens to jail both of them for 14 years if Tillu does not cooperate with the mission. Radhika convinces Tillu to go through with it for the sake of her marriage.

At the party, Tillu gives Mehboob the sweets, but he already knows that they are poisoned after being told by his informant. Mehboob then detains Tillu, forcing Lilly’s team to abandon the mission, and tortures him, seemingly killing him.

A week later, Lilly is surprised by Tillu, who is alive and well. He reveals that he escaped from Mehboob by negotiating with Shannon to poison the milk that he drank and then forcing him to let him go in exchange for the antidote. ISF agents then arrest Mehboob once he gets his antidote. Lilly is surprised, as the mission was to kill Mehboob, but Tillu reveals that killing him was only Lilly’s personal agenda, and that she is actually Mehboob’s informant. She had been trying to kill Mehboob so that he wouldn’t be taken alive and reveal her deceit. Lilly is arrested, and she asks Tillu why he bailed out Radhika but allowed Lilly to be arrested, to which he responds that Lilly had only fallen in love with him to deceive him. It is then shown that the story would continue in Tillu Cube.

Reception

Critical Reception

Tillu Square received generally positive to mixed reviews with critics praising Jonnalagadda’s performance, humour, soundtrack while the predictable and similar storyline was criticised.

Paul Nicodemus of theThe Times of India gave the movie a 3.5/5 stating "Tillu Square is a captivating entertainer that guarantees smiles and leaves the audience feeling elated and satisfied. A hat tip to Siddu Jonnalagadda and Mallik Ram for rekindling the magic. It’s a must-watch for anyone seeking two hours of fun-filled entertainment." Priyanka Sundar of the Firstpost gave the movie a 3/5 stating " For once, here is a homegrown comedy franchise that has come out with a successful second outing. I believe that the filmmakers understood their assignment pretty well. They oompahed up the elements that worked wonders for the previous film that came out in 2022, and corrected flaws that could have dragged the film down otherwise, the one thing that was unfortunate in Tillu Square is the makers attempt to include bits and pieces that was a call back to the original."[12]

Raghu Bandi of the Indian Express gave the film 3/5 stating "Tillu Square is filled with punchy one-liners. Most of them refer generously to DJ Tillu. If you have seen the first part, your enjoyment of this film might be multifold. Even otherwise, the comedy here is excellent."[13] Janani K of India Today gave the movie a 3/5 stating "All in all, Siddhu Jonnalagadda's 'Tillu Square' is an entertaining film that works for the most part. The film's comedy and Siddhu's performance are its major strengths helping it match to the hype of its prequel, 'DJ Tillu'."[14]

Ram Venkat Srikar of filmcompanion praised the movie stating "Tillu Square is a rare sequel that improves on the original in nearly every aspect. We got a true sequel that not only traces the progress of the protagonist and the lingering consequences of his murky past, but also fixes the issues from the first film."[15] Sangeetha Devi Dundoo of The Hindu praised the movie stating "The sequel, co-written by Siddhu Jonnalagadda, who reprises the titular character, director Mallik Ram and writer Ravi Anthony, is acutely aware of what made the original click such that its dialogues and scenes continue to have immense recall value. They try to amp up the fun by building on the familiarity of the first film and manage to deliver. Had the writing, performances and execution faltered, Tillu would have become a one-time wonder. Tillu Square is a rare case of a sequel being better than the first film and the collective cheer continuing till the end."[16]

BVS Prakash of the Deccan Chronicle gave the movie a 2/5 stating "The much-hyped sequel ‘Tillu Square’ falls short of raising expectations due to a contrived plot. No doubt, Siddhu Jonnalagadda is back in his elements and evokes enough fun with his comic-punchlines and unique mannerisms, but it is not enough to pull off a 2 and half hour film that rides on an impossible mission."[17]

Sequel

A sequel titled Tillu Cube was announced at the end of the film.[18]
