Question from RushingGold (17:34, 1 January 2024)

Hi @Estar8806, I have another question. It is this that why VPN addresses have been blocked from editing. Not everybody is using a VPN from that IP address. VPN are good so why then no editing for VPN users. I'm asking you because unfortunately, I couldn't find a page talking about this. --RushingGold (talk) 17:34, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again @RushingGold!
VPNs tend to be problematic as vandals can hide behind a changing IP address. Because of thus, all VPNs are blocked and unfortunately registered and unproblematic users are caught in them. For more information, you can read WP:Open proxies. Hope this helps! estar8806 (talk) โ˜… 03:34, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Eatronies (20:27, 9 January 2024)

I have spent the past two hours trying to find a way to correct a major error as follows. This is an edit request and all I get is report error, I have been trying to report a major error in a woman's bio as below and was directed to this page & have followed instructions. In the list of Rhodes Scholars Sarah Harding 1988 is described as the Sarah Harding an English singer

and a model. She died of cancer in 2021 according to google & Wiki. The Rhodes Scholar Harding is Canadian and a Dean of Law, Weldon Professor of Law, at the Schulich School of law in Toronto Ontario Canada. Information for the correct Harding can be found at https://www.dal.ca/faculty/law/faculty-staff/our-faculty/sarah-harding.html

Question from RushingGold (16:46, 14 January 2024)

Hi Estar8806, as you know, I wanna contribute to Wikipedia and when you want to contribute to Wikipedia, you need to edit articles, in which you need cite form other sources to show that what the article is showing is correct. So, I wanted to cite to show that what the article is showing is correct but it was so confusing like how to put those numbers in for citing, showing date for my citing and understand these codes like I was so confused, I was like "I need to talk with you". Please, I wanna contribute but citing stuff is so hard and confusing. The help page from Wikipedia about citing was too long and complicated, I didn't read it. I made edits on Jack Grealish, Darwin Nรบรฑez and many. I gave their pronunciation without any citing by thinking that it would be understood without any citing. Unfortunately, that wasn't case and I got warning strike and doing like this more will result that I'll get blocked. So, Estar8806, please help me how to cite, because without citing stuff, my edits will be doubted about its reliability and I'll soon be blocked from editing from Wikipedia. Plus, I am sorry if this is very long and not-understandable, I sometimes talk like that for some reason. --RushingGold (talk) 16:46, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @RushingGold,
The easiest way to cite something would be to find one of relevant the citation templates (eg. {{Cite web}} {{Cite book}}, etc) and fill in the relevant information. estar8806 (talk) โ˜… 16:58, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, nice of you to offer help! I am trying to create a page Draft:MAPHEUS to describe a sounding rocket program run by the German Aerospace Center. I think it merits mention, given that wikipedia has similar pages such as Rexus/Bexus or Maser (rocket). However my submission was declined. Do you have suggestions how I can improve the article. New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Estar8806,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

May 2024 (resolved)

We reach consensus by using talk pages, not by doing things like this. Consensus is never achieved through edit summaries. Didn't you know that? SergeWoodzing (talk) 16:54, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@SergeWoodzing I don't exactly know where this rather uncivil tone is coming from considering we've had generally pleasant interactions in the past, but I digress. "Never" is quite the strong word- consensus shouldn't be and (wasn't) sought through edit summaries, but sometimes over the natural course of editing it is. Nonetheless, I was under the false impression that the change from her mother's maiden name to her royal title was a recent one and not a relatively longstanding edit. Yet, I still don't see reason to break the consistency with her siblings infoboxes nor with those of most other children of royal couples. estar8806 (talk) โ˜… 22:10, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is about your behavior, not about the article. You have interpreted an uncivil tone into comments that were not intended as such. I thought, in good faith, that you didn't realize that talk on a talk page is neccessary to achieve consensus, not reverts with edit summaries, where no discussion is plausible without edit warring. Now I see that you apparently feel consensus sometimes can be achieved through such edit summaries. It never is. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 11:12, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SergeWoodzing Your "good faith" comment does come off very bitey. I think our disagreement is arising in that I personally don't equate "consensus" with "discussion". You can form a consensus through editing by finding a common ground without necessarily discussing it (while still avoiding warring of course). And you're absolutely right that discussions shouldn't take place in edit summaries. estar8806 (talk) โ˜… 22:22, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sad that you feel the need to attack good-faith advice with slurry personal jibes, and twice now! And that you apparently don't even bother to read what someone takes the time to write to you before jibing. Agreement between 2 editors and consensus are not the same thing. Consensus is when more than two people are given the opportunity to chime on a talk page and consensus is reached there. That cannot be accomplished through reverts with edit summaries. Talk is initiated on a talk page before reverting or at least at the same time. That's how Wikipedia admins want us to behave. I too have had to learn the hard way. You logged in for the first time in December 2019, created you user page last year and have been very busy since then, regularly with good work. Perhaps you feel you no longer need to care about good advice from users who have been here much longer (without taking a stab at them), not just me? I repeat: sad. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 15:36, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SergeWoodzing I apologize if my comments were perceived as a personal jibe, my intent was only to point out that it did come off very bitey. And you're absolutely right about everything else you've said. I wasn't making the distinction between agreement between 2 editors and consensus. And I completely missed your specification of "reverts" with edit summaries. And again, I apologize if you felt I was taken a stab at your character: I was only responding to what I perceived as an intentionally sarcastic comment, which does not seem to have been your intent. estar8806 (talk) โ˜… 16:50, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ashleymdye (17:01, 10 May 2024)

Hi Estar8806, I joined Wikipedia to produce pages for graduate-level course assignments. The assignments are to edit an existing article or create a new article. My partner and I decided to create a new article and our professor insists that it should not be a draft and that it can be moved from the draft space to a published article without submitting it for review. Our article was denied after review, but it needs to be submitted ASAP. Can you assist me with this? I am having a difficult time finding an answer to this issue anywhere. --Ashleymdye (talk) 17:01, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
