The 155th Separate Infantry Brigade (Ukrainian: 155 окрема піхотна бригада, romanized155 okrema pіhotna bryhada), is a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces formed on 8 May 2024.[1] It was part of the creation and expansion of nine other brigades in the Ukrainian Ground Forces, announced by its commander Oleksandr Pavliuk, in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[4]

The brigade was formed on 8 May 2024 and was announced by ITV Rivne, it is undergoing the process and stage of formation to become a fully-fledged and capable unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.[3] It is expected that these units will help to defend against a potential Russian offensive in 2024.[4]

History

Formation

The brigade was formed after a Ukrainian mobilization law came into force, reportedly being highly divisive.[5] The mobilisation law also saw the draft age being lowered from 27 to 25, and placing penalties for those avoiding conscription.[4] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also signed two other laws, allowing prisoners to join the army, helping to provide more manpower for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.[5]

It was reported by Forbes that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense were forming and expanding 10 new brigades that would consist of 2,000 people.[4] It was noted that these brigades are not mechanized brigades, unlike many other units in the Ukrainian Ground Forces, but rather are infantry brigades - meaning they lack the armored vehicles that are distinctly used by mechanized units.[4] In an article by The Kyiv Independent, Pavluvik stated that some of these units would be stationed in Kyiv, Kyiv Oblast where it was expected that Russian offensives could potentially target.[6] It was also noted that the creation of these units as infantry brigades came about due to Ukraine's shortage of heavy vehicles, with Forbes deeming it as "severe".

Pavluvik stated that defending Kyiv remained one of the main concerns of the Ukrainian high command and hinted that a renewed Russian offensive may take place in the area - with the general acknowledging the key role the defense of the capital will play in the future.[6]

The brigade was first acknowledged to have existed on 8 May 2024, when a Ukrainians news outlet in Rivne known as ITV Rivne reported about the forming of a new infantry brigade designated as the 155th Infantry Brigade - the first brigade to come into fruition following the announcement of expanding and creating ten new brigades by Pavluvik. It was reported that Rivne City Council donated various equipment to the newly created brigade in order to meet the certain needs of the soldiers in the unit.[3] The brigade has not yet received an insignia.[citation needed]

Russo-Ukrainian War

Russian invasion of Ukraine

The 155th Infantry Brigade, much like other brigades including the 159th Infantry Brigade, is expected to play a significant role since its formation, most probably expected to repel a potential Russian offensive in 2024.
