Access dates

[edit]

Hi, re your comment as to why some access dates were commented out, the position is that if a permanent ID is present, like a DOI, they aren't needed. See Help:Citation Style 1#Access date. Peter coxhead (talk) 06:18, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thanks. (For future reference: this was in relation to my edit summary in Special:Diff/1030111269.) —2d37 (talk) 08:10, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Application of MOS:LANG to loanwords

[edit]

Hi 2d37

At Sweet potato cultivation in Polynesia you have encased numerous words of Māori origin in {{lang}}, per MOS:LANG. This is quite correct in some cases, but in some other cases it seems incorrect to me. I want to check your thinking about this. MOS:LANG says, "Non-English words or phrases should be encased in {{lang}}". However, Wikipedia:Manual of Style says, "Non-English names [of organisms] that have become English-assimilated are treated as English". It says further, "A non-English proper name should generally not be italicized, unless it would be for some other reason".

Words that you have treated as non-English include kōwhai, kūmara, mana, pūkeko, tohunga and waka, all of which are listed at List of English words of Māori origin. Many proper names have also been treated as non-English, including names of places (e.g. Aotearoa and Whakatāne), people, tribes and canoes.

On reconsideration, would you agree that these cases can be treated as English and not be encased in {{lang}}"? Thanks. Nurg (talk) 02:39, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In thought I am reluctant to agree, but in action I defer to your greater experience. I confess I did not expect MOS:LANG, saying nothing about capital letters, to be subject to an exception buried in WP:MOS § Capital letters. Would you object if I move this thread to the article's talk page? —2d37 (talk) 23:30, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have no objection to you moving this thread to the article's talk page. Nurg (talk) 08:57, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
