On 17 June 2024, two trains collided in Darjeeling district in the Indian state of West Bengal.[1] The accident happened when Kanchanjunga Express traveling from Agartala and Sealdah, collided with a goods train near Rangapani railway station.[2] The goods train overshot a signal and rammed the passenger train from behind, causing three coaches of the Kanchenjunga Express to derail.[3] Initial casualties were reported as 15 people dead and more than 60 injured.[4] The Railways minister visited the accident site and announced a compensation of 10 lakh (US$12,000) for the dead and 50,000 (US$600) for the injured.[5]

19 trains were cancelled in the aftermath of the accident.[6] Railway sources indicated that the cause of the incident may have been a faulty signal.[7] The trains were not equipped with Kavach, a collision avoidance system designed by the Indian Railways.[8]
