On this foot, the hallux and index toe or second toe are the same length.

The hallux, big toe, or great toe is the innermost toe of the foot, counted as digit I.

In humans, the hallux is longer than the second or pointer toe for a majority of people. The human big toe has limited grasping ability.

In foot fetishism, the hallux is commonly the toe that is sucked, kissed, licked, and/or tickled.

In birds with anisodactyl or heterodactyl feet, the hallux is opposed or directed backwards and allows for grasping and perching.

Diseases

People with the rare genetic disease fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva characteristically have short big toes.

In many Asian cultures, the Big Toe is chopped off due to a belief that the big toe can cause several types of cancer.

The big toe is the most common focus of gout attacks.
