Incident

Around 11:06 PM, on January 11, 2006, a former student, purposely started a fire in the school, burning four classrooms and causing over one million dollars of total damage. The arsonist also sprayed an insult to someone in the school on a wall. Although the fire damaged some classrooms, the school tried to maintain a normal routine for the students with classes still going on. Counselling was provided if needed to any children in the school.

A $25,000 reward was put to "information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the arson fire..." Of the $25,000, $12,000 was approved from the Police Department for any information for a suspected person(s) having anything to do with the fire. [2] Another $12,500 was provided from the Board's Special Reserve Fund. [3]

Everybody in the community helped to raise money to rebuild the school while portable classrooms were used in the time between. A local ValuMart held some benefit fundraising, serving hot dogs, chips, etc. and donating all the money earned to the school. A local McDonald's let the school held a "McTeacher Night" on March 29, 2006, and donated 20% of the sales that night to the Emperor PTA Fire Relief Fund. Other community clubs like the Kiwanis Club held a Pancake Breakfast on February 25, 2006 and donated the proceeds of the breakfast to the fire relief fund as well.
