Aqsa "Axa" Parvez (1991December 10, 2007). Muhammad Parvez, her father, is accused of having killed his daughter after she reportedly refused to wear a hijab and declared her desire to dress like other western girls.[1]

Background

Parvez was a student of Applewood Heights Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Her father, Muhammad Parvez, was a taxicab driver.[2]

One student reported that her father was threatening her, causing her to fear for her life.[2] Parvez's friends also said she wanted to run away from her family to escape the conflicts with them.[3]

Incident

Around 8 am (EST) on December 10, 2007,[4] Peel Regional Police responded to a 911 call from a man who had said he had just killed his daughter.[5] When officers arrived at a single-family detached home, they found Parvez suffering from life-threatening injuries.[6] She was immediately taken to Credit Valley Hospital and later transferred in critical condition to the Hospital for Sick Children where she died.[6] Her father, Muhammad Parvez, had allegedly strangled her, causing her to die from neck compression.[2]

Reaction

Parvez's father was charged with second-degree murder and denied bail.[7] Her brother, 26-year-old Waqas Parvez, who was ordered by his father to not communicate with police[2], is facing a charge of obstructing police and is in custody.[7] The incident was reported internationally on various news stations.

Some people consider this murder to be a case of an honour killing and others state that this is a case of domestic violence. In either case the death has stirred intense debate on what if any role the religion of Islam and Sharia law may have had in the death of the girl. It has among other issues revived the story of the similar murder in 1989 of teenager Tina Isa, and many other similar incidents around the world.
