Ramat HaSharon (Template:Lang-he-n, lit. Heights of the Sharon) is a city located on Israel's central coastal strip in the south of the Sharon region, bordering Tel Aviv to the south and Herzliya and Kibbutz Glil Yam to the north. It is part of the Gush Dan Tel Aviv metropolitan area and is in the Tel Aviv District. The city has a population of 53,004, and interestingly, less than 50% of its municipal area is built up, as it is bordered by two large installations limiting the growth of the city; Israel’s largest fuel and gas center, and the main plant depot of the Israeli military.

History

Ramat HaSharon was established in 1922 as Ir Shalom (City of Peace), and was first settled one year later, in 1923. Later, in 1932, the city was renamed Kefar Ramat HaSharon (Sharon Heights), with the "Kefar" being officially dropped several years later.

Demographics

The majority of the buildings in Ramat Hasharon are residential, with single family lots for families of medium to high income, although the number of multiple family dwellings is growing. There is one neighborhood, a relic of the immigration waves of the 1950s, which is lower income.
