Proseline

The "current events" section of the band's history is beginning to look like proseline. This needs a dose of editing.

racists

anyone who thinks that 311 is racist is a jackass and should be shot. therefore we should remove that section. no sane person who has ever heard 311's music would ever think that they are racist. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.192.12.135 (talk) 20:43, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Redirection

When you type 311 in the search, it takes you to the year. I think the band would be the most common usage and not the year, and it should be the one the search automatically goes to. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.128.2.9 (talk) 14:49, August 21, 2007 (UTC)

Jim Watson departure

Jim Watson didn't leave 311 voluntarily, they asked him to leave because they didn't feel his guitar playing was up to par.

I think somewhere in the 311 Q&A section on their website, P-nut says the hardest thing he had to do was tell Jim he wasn't in the band any longer. Additionally, I thought only Watson was caught skinny dipping, not both Watson and Wills. Badfishstan 20:42, 14 July 2007 (UTC)Badfishstan[reply]

Website 311.com Q&A Archive mentions that P-nut and friends went skinny dipping and that Watson got caught. I'm going to make appropriate changes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.85.36.247 (talk) 03:56, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Scott Stapp fight

One thing a person should remember when they read the article is who 311 got in the fight with: Scott Stapp, who has had fights with other musicians, and has been divorced a couple times also. Also, if Scott insulted the wife as the article states, then even if the security footage "looks" like 311 started it, Scott might have uttered the insult under his breath. Either way, Scott doesn't have the best of reputations and has been known to get violent when intoxicated. I have music from both Creed and 311, and I am a big fan of 311 while I rarely listen to my Creed cds, but I do like them both. I urge everyone to listen to 311's From Chaos album at least once, so that you can determine for yourself. Even if you don't like the music, you have to respect a band smart enough to buy their own recording studio; it shows they like playing, rather than looking at it as a job. And if you go to one of their concerts, you definitely get your money's worth. Scott Stapp has a good voice, but as is noticable in the music from his solo album, his ego gets in the way. Creed had a good grunge sound, but their music is very similar to many bands that are still out there; they only stood out a little with the Christian lyrics (P.O.D. is a good example of better rock with Christian lyrics). Probably until the next fight Scott Stapp gets into, people will forget about him.Jbird713 03:55, 4 May 2006 (UTC)jbird713[reply]

Um... Okay?

That entire section sounds like a 12-year-old's diary entry. Fucking rubbish. Deleting it. But you will probably see it return about .001 seconds afterward because of the fucking content Nazi's thinking it is vandalism. This is not democracy.

Misplaced content

Someone posted this on the 311 (date) page, but it is clearly about this band. Does it belong here or is it rightfully discarded?

Original text:

311 was formed in 1990 in Omaha, Nebraska by five self-described "friends for life" (singer/guitarist Nick Hexum, singer S.A. Martinez, guitarist Tim Mahoney, drummer Chad Sexton and the bassist known only as P-Nut), whose common link was a passion for both music and life that eventually brought them together to make music with a positive message behind it. After gigging locally (and by all reports quickly conquering the local music scene there), the quintet moved to Los Angeles, where they signed with Capricorn Records in 1991.
Since that time, 311 have released several albums, including 1992's Music, 1993's Grassroots, and 1995's 311 (aka the "Blue" album), the latter reaching number 12 on the album chart, selling three million copies worldwide, and sporting the tracks "All Mixed Up" and "Down."
In 1996, following a non-stop year of touring, the band released Enlarged to Show Detail, a home video of live performances taken from amphitheater shows in Kansas City and Denver, as well behind-the-scenes looks at life on the road. That the video has been certified platinum in sales is strong testament to the unique relationship the band has with its fans. In 1997, Transistor, a double album of new songs on one CD, was released, and the group mounted its most ambitious tour yet, a worldwide stretch of concerts intended to enlarge the band's already large and loyal fan base. "When we first started the band, we were always sure something good was going to happen," says drummer Chad Sexton, "and we've never gone backwards in any way since." Live followed in 1998, and a year later, 311 returned with Soundsystem. The band jumped to Volcano for From Chaos, which appeared in summer 2001, and followed that with Evolver two years later. By now 311 had been together over ten years, and they celebrated with a Greatest Hits comp. Released in July 2004, it included all of their hit singles, a few new tracks, and the band's gracefully-reggaeing cover of the Cure's "Love Song," originally from the soundtrack to Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's 50 First Dates. 311 came back with new material in August 2005 with the Don't Tread on Me LP. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide

Mainstream success

Their mainstream breakthrough obviously started with the Blue Album so I moved the stuff about that album to the proper section. Also, all the info I added regarding their album's gold and platinum status or lack thereof comes from RIAA.com. The info regarding their chart success or lack thereof comes from allmusic.com. Biggest Concert

"On August 26, 2006, 311 hosted their biggest concert ever, at the Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheatre in Atlanta, Georgia with over 18,566 in attendance."

Didn't their concert at Memorial Park in Omaha in 2004 attract an estimated 30,000+? Or are we talking just ticketed events?

On 8/17/06 at PNC Arts Center in NJ it was said to be 311's largest show with over 19,000 people, largest show where they were a headliner, so that may disqualify the Memorial Park show if there were other artists. Badfishstan 16:22, 12 September 2006 (UTC)badfishstan[reply]

Racism

It should also be noted that singer Doug "SA" Martinez is of Latino descent and would not likely be a member in a racist group.

Because clearly, only white people can be racist. --144.131.67.249 21:27, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If only that was true. Racism is not limited to white people, you idiot.

whoever is above is a complete tard. have you ever heard of sarcasm? shit head

If only it was true? SA is a latino. And with all of the other members being white why would they let a latino into the group if they were racist?

Well the KKK is against everyone who isn't a white christian.--DavidFuzznut 07:48, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

311 Day 2004

I was there on 311 day 2004. I actually made my way onto the dvd right at the beginning :). But anyway, I spoke with Jim before the concert, long story, but he told me there was a long set list decided, and minutes before they were to go on, they decided to add a few more, making it 72.

The number given on this wiki page says 64, which is probably what someone figured from looking at the DVD of the concert. There were 68 songs and 4 were ommitted due to some error. Set list can be found here http://setlist.com/311/2004/3.11.04.html

So if someone with more experience could change this, and cite with that link, that would be great! 17:24, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

311 borrows lyrics from 77's

I added to the controversy section the fact that a couple of lines belonging to The 77s were repeated in a 311 song, which is a great compliment to the 77s, in my opinion. I've provided citations, so I don't think there would be any disagreements on the addition, but feel free to post here if you disagree. --Abbynormal1 23:35, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The section I added now says "citation needed", which I'm having trouble understanding. The sources are sited as links to the 311 lyrics and their published date and then the 77s lyrics and their publish date. Conclusions can be drawn from that alone however the issue is also noted in the wiki for the 77s. --Abbynormal1 23:36, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Whoever edited the 311 borrows lyrics from 77's section under controversy that I wrote did a great job clarifying the use of the lyrics. Thanks. --Abbynormal1 05:08, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alien communication from space? You don't say.

From the Mainstream Breakthrough section:

The track Transistor also has a "hidden" introduction in which an audio file is mixed in that is thought to be alien communications from space.

Gee, you'd think a possible alien communication from space would be worthy of its own article.

"Is thought" by whom? --63.25.106.115 23:59, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The mention of the alien communications, is only half correct. The audio that is recorded from space appears at the end of the album, not mixed in with the hidden introduction. Check the WP page for the Transistor album.Badfishstan 20:36, 14 July 2007 (UTC) BadFishStan[reply]

I found Image:311 - Greatest Hits 93-03.jpg and noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. Someone will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If it was obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If there are other files on this page, consider checking that they have specified their source and are tagged properly, too. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 05:30, 26 May 2007 (UTC). Fair use rationale for Image:311 - Greatest Hits 93-03.jpg

Image:311 - Greatest Hits 93-03.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 05:30, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

you go Betabot. You magnificent bastard.

Best band in the world?

I can't find any confirmation that 311 is the "best band in the world." Can we get some citation here?
