The 10p tax rate was a measure in the United Kingdom budget, until 2008.
Description
The 10p band was introduced in the 1999 Budget. It required the taxing of 10p in every pound between £6000 and around £18000. It was the lowest rate of income tax, and as such was the only income tax paid by the several million lowest earners. [1]
Abolition
The 2007 budget, Gordon Brown's last, abolished the 10p tax rate in favour of a 20p tax rate for all those earning between £6000 and around £28000. This meant that all those earning below £18000 saw their tax bill double. As such, it was the source of considerable criticism from within the Labour Party. High profile figures protesting include former ministers Frank Field and Angela Christine Smith [2]
