Pershing is the second full length studio album from indie pop/rock band Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. It was released through Polyvinyl Records on April 8th, 2008.[1] The anticipated followup to the group's acclaimed debut, Broom, Pershing is a Polyvinyl Record Co. featured release.[2]

Background and Production

A pre-order edition of the album featured exlusive original artwork and three additional tracks. The first two are demo acoustic songs: an early draft of The Beach Song, I Didn't Mean it; and Stain, a full band cover of the Nirvana song.[3]

The album's name refers to John J. Pershing Middle School in Springfield,Missouri, in which Philip Dickey attended, which was named after fellow Missourian and American General of the Armies during World War I, John J. Pershing, as referenced by a message from Harry and the Potters, a band with whom SSLYBY toured.[4]

The album is dedicated to Alex Bethurem, a Chicago area indie music fan who took his own life.[5]

Track 10, HEERS, references the Heers Building, which is located in downtown Springfield and once housed a local department store but has been vacant for decades.

Reception

The album received a great deal of internet buzz, similar to Broom and tracks have been favorably reviewed and featured on numerous indie music blogs.[6]

Recorded in Springfield, MO and Wilmington, N.C. in 2007, the album's production is more refined than the lo-fi Broom, but retains many key qualities such as doubled vocals, moving bass lines, and sparkly clean guitar lines played by both electric and acoustic guitars. One review describes it as "Quirky chord changes amid massive hooks and addictive melodies."[7]
