Cito Gaston is the only manager to win the World Series with the Blue Jays.

The Toronto Blue Jays is the only Canadian baseball franchise in Major League Baseball (MLB). In baseball, the head coach of a team is called the manager, or more formally, the field manager; there have been 12 different managers of the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays are members of both Major League Baseball's American League (AL) and of its East division. They are the only team outside of the United States to win the World Series,[1] and are currently the only Major League Baseball team outside the United States after the Montreal Expos moved to Washington, D.C. and became the Washington Nationals.[2]

Cito Gaston, the current manager of the Blue Jays, also managed team from 1989 to 1997. He was the fourth African-American manager in MLB history and the first to win a World Series.[3][4] He has the most games and wins of any Blue Jays manager with 1334 games and 690 wins.[5] He is followed by Bobby Cox in both categories with 648 games and 355 wins.[6] Cox won the AL Manager of the Year Award in 1985.[7] Mel Queen has the best winning percentage by winning 80 percent of his 5 games coached. Gaston is the only Blue Jays manager to win a World Series in 1992 and 1993. The Blue Jays have not gone to the playoffs since their last World Series win.[8]

Notes

  • a A running total of the number of managers of the Blue Jays. Thus any manager who has two separate terms as manager is only counted once.
  • b Gene Tenace coached until the end of the 1991 Toronto Blue Jays season; however, he did not coach in the playoffs, as he was only a interim manager for Cito Gaston.
