Sacrifice (2008) was the fourth annual Sacrifice professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). The event took place on May 11, 2008 from the Impact! Zone in Orlando, Florida.[1]

The main event was for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship in a 3-Way Dance between, the reigning champion, Samoa Joe, and the two challengers, Kurt Angle, and Scott Steiner. Before the event began, it was changed to a 3-Way Dance between Joe, Steiner, and the winner of the The TerrorDome, which was eventually won by Kaz. Angle was removed from the match due to sustaining a legit injury during a match in Korea.[2] Joe retained the TNA World Heavyweight Championship after he performed a Muscle Buster on Steiner to gain the pinfall.[3] The predominant matches on the card were featured in The Deuces Wild Tag Team Tournament to crown the new TNA World Tag Team Champions, after the titles had been vacated on Impact! a few weeks prior to the event. The tournament included the teams of Sting and James Storm, Booker T and Robert Roode, Team 3D (Brother Ray and Brother Devon), B.G. James and Awesome Kong, Kip James and Matt Morgan, A.J. Styles and Super Eric, Christian Cage and Rhino, and The Latin American X-Change (Homicide and Hernandez) (LAX). LAX won the tournament by defeating Team 3D in the Finals, when Homicide pinned Devon after a Frog Splash.[4] The primary match on the undercard was the debuting of TNA's newest innovation, The TerrorDome, which had Johnny Devine, Curry Man, Kaz, Consequences Creed, Shark Boy, Jimmy Rave, Chris Sabin, Alex Shelly, Jay Lethal, and Sonjay Dutt all fighting for number one contendership to the TNA X Division Championship and to take Angle's place in the main event. The match was won by Kaz when he escaped the cage through the hole in the ceiling.[5]

After Sacrifice, Joe went on to defend the TNA World Heavyweight Championship at Slammiversary in the King of the Mountain match (KOTM) against Booker T, Roode, Cage, and Rhino. At Slammiversary, Joe retained the World Heavyweight Championship in the KOTM, becoming the first to ever do so.[6] LAX began a small feud with Team 3D, as they went on to defend the TNA World Tag Team Championship against them at Slammiversary. LAX successfully retained the Tag Team Championship after Homicide pinned Ray with a roll-up.[7] The winner of the TerrorDome, Kaz, competed against Petey Williams at Slammiversary for the TNA X Division Championship, but, however, failed in his attempt. As Williams won the match by pinfall after executing the Canadian Destroyer on Kaz to retain the X Division Championship.[8]

The main feud heading into Sacrifice was between Samoa Joe, Scott Steiner, and Kurt Angle, with the three fighting over the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. This feud started before Lockdown on the April 03 edition of TNA Impact!, when Steiner told Angle, who was champion at the time, that he was cashing in his Feast or Fired TNA World Heavyweight Championship match, which he won at Turning Point in 2007[9], against whoever walked out of Lockdown champion.[10] On the April 17 edition of Impact!, Steiner said to, the new TNA World Heavyweight Champion, Joe that he was cashing in his title shot at Sacrifice.[11] After Steiner's announcement, Angle interrupted and said that in his contract there was a clause (kayfabe) that stated he got a rematch if he lost a title whenever he wanted.[12][13] Followed by stating that he was activating that clause for the next week's Impact!.[14] On the April 24 edition of Impact!, Joe successfully retained the TNA World Heavyweight Championship against Angle in his rematch. He won the match by pinfall after Steiner hit Angle in the head with a led pipe, while the referee was unconscious and Joe wasn't looking, and a Powerslam.[15] Because of the controversial ending, Management Director Jim Cornette made the TNA World Heavyweight Championship match at Sacrifice a 3-Way Dance between Joe, Angle, and Steiner.[16]

A angle heading into Sacrifice was the crowning of the new TNA World Tag Team Champions in The Deuces Wild Tag Team Tournament. On the April 17 edition of Impact!, Kaz and Eric Young, The Latin American X-Change (Homicide and Hernandez) (LAX), and, the defending champions, A.J. Styles and Tomko were all involved in a 3-Way Dance for the World Tag Team Championship.[12][13] The match ended in a controversial fashion where Young left mid way through to go backstage. He later returned to finish the match, but in his alter ego Super Eric. Afterwards, Kaz and Young won the match and the World Tag Team Championship when Young pinned Styles after a Northern Lights suplex.[14] Because of Super Eric's involvement, Styles and Tomko said they were cheated out of the World Tag Team Championship by interference.[11] As Styles and Tomko explained, Young and Super Eric were two different people. Cornette then attempted to get Young to announce that he was Super Eric and tried to get Super Eric to announce that he was Young.[14] The plan failed, however, as Young and Super Eric both denied the clams by Cornette.[13] Because of this, Cornette had to vacate the World Tag Team Championship.[11] On the April 24 edition of Impact!, Cornette announced a tournament, titled the Deuces Wild Tag Team Tournament, that would commence at Sacrifice to crown the new TNA World Tag Team Champions.[15] It involved eight established teams, fighting in qualification matches with only four teams moving on to the Quarterfinals of the tournament to take place at Sacrifice. The teams that fought in these matches were Team 3D, Christian Cage and Rhino, A.J. Styles and Super Eric (Super Eric was a replacement for Tomko as he was Kayfabe injurd in Japan.), LAX, The Motor City Machine Guns (Chris Sabin and Alex Shelly) (MCMG) , The Rock 'N Rave Infection (Lance Hoyt and Jimmy Rave) (RNRI), Rellik and Black Reign, and Kaz and Eric Young. The first qualification match, held on the April 24 edition of Impact!, was Team 3D versus Rellik and Reign. Team 3D won the match to become the first team to advance to the Quarterfinals at Sacrifice.[17] The second, held later in the night after Team 3D advanced, was the MCMG versus Cage and Rhino. Which Cage and Rhino were victorious in to advance to Sacrifice.[18] LAX defeated Kaz and Young on the May 1 edition of Impact! to be the third.[19] The final team to qualify was Styles and Super Eric after they defeated RNRI on the same edition.[20] The four to move on then fought the so called "Egotistical-eight" at Sacrifice. The eight were Sting, James Storm, Booker T, Robert Roode, Kip James, Matt Morgan, B.G. James, and Awesome Kong. The eight made up four teams that were to be announced at Sacrifice, however, on the May 8 edition of Impact!, Cornete announced two of the four teams. The two announced were Sting and Storm, and Kip and Morgan.[21] The final two teams were determined at Sacrifice and were Booker T and Roode, and B.G. and Kong.[22]

Also at Sacrifice, was the debuting of TNA's newest innovation: The TerrorDome. On the April 24 edition of Impact!, Cornette announced that a new match would be unveiled on the next week's edition of Impact!.[23] On the May 01 edition of Impact!, the plans were unveiled in a small video package.[24] It was described as being the X Division's newest innovative match and a cross between The Elevation X, The Six Sides of Steel, and the The Ultimate X matches. Stating that it takes the strength of Ultimate X, but it has the danger of Elevation X and Six Sides of Steel. On the May 08 edition of Impact!, the participants in the match were announced to be Kaz, Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt, Chris Sabin, Alex Shelly, Consequences Creed, Jimmy Rave, Curry Man, Shark Boy, and Johnny Devine, with the added stipulation of the winner got a future TNA X Division Championship match.[25] As told by the TNA Impact! announcers; Mike Tenay and Don West, the only way to win was to escape through a small hole above the ring.

From the women's division the main match was the TNA Knockouts Makeover Battle Royal. On the April 17 edition of Impact!, Cornette stated in a backstage segment that he was tired of all of the Knockouts complaining and being spoiled brats.[11] On the April 24 edition of Impact!, Cornette announced that at Sacrifice there would be the first ever TNA Knockouts Makeover Battle Royal.[17] Explained by Cornette, the match began as a battle royal, until it came down to the final two participants and then it became a ladder match. With the final two fighting to retrieve a contract for a future TNA Women's Knockout Championship match hanging above the ring. The one that retrieved the contract got the future title match while the loser got her head shaved bald.[23] The match involved Gail Kim, O.D.B., Traci Brooks, Roxxi Laveaux, Angelina Love, Jacqueline, Rhaka Khan, Christy Hemme, Velvet Sky, and Salinas. On the May 08 edition of Impact!, Kim won a Knockouts Sheers on a Pole match to gain immunity from having her head shaved bald if she lost.[26]

Event

Before the show began, there was a pre-taped interview between Jeremy Borash and Kurt Angle. With Borash asking Angle what his doctor said about the injury he sustained in Korea. Angle replied that he had three cracked Vertebrae in his neck as well as two herniated disks, and that he couldn't afford to wrestle tonight, because his doctor said he couldn't.[22] Angle was then removed from the main event. Because of this, it was changed to Samoa Joe versus Scott Steiner for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship.

The first match to air live on pay-per-view was between Team 3D (Brother Ray and Brother Devon), and Sting and James Storm, who was accompanied by Jacqueline, which was the first match of the Quarterfinals of The Deuces Wild Tag Team Tournament.[3] It began with Storm and Devon squaring off. After a few minutes, Storm tagged in Sting, the match was back and forth with Sting fighting off both members of Team 3D from their on. While Storm sat on the ring apron and drank beer. Towards the end of the match, Team 3D gained control and introduced a table. Followed by Sting performing a double clothesline to Ray and Devon. While Ray and Devon were getting up, Sting moved the table to the center of the ring. Storm then entered and screamed incoherently, and motioned for Ray and Devon to attack Sting, Storm then ascended to the top rope to watch what happened. While Ray and Devon looked at each other puzzled. They then moved out of the way to allow Sting to lift Storm off the top rope and push him towards the center to crashed through the table. Afterwards, Devon gained the pinfall, as Sting left the ring and walked to the backstage area.[22]

Booker T turned heel at Sacrifice by attacking Christian Cage and Rhino

The second Quarterfinal match was next, it was the team of Booker T and Robert Roode, determined at the event, against the established team of Christian Cage and Rhino.[27] Before the match, Roode and Booker T had a small confrontation while Rhino made his way to the ring. The match began with Rhino and Roode. It was mainly dominated by Cage and Rhino, as Rhino used his power and Cage using his speed to prevent Roode from tagging in Booker T. Cage and Rhino claimed victory in the match when Rhino clotheslined Booker T over the ropes, sending him to the floor, Roode then went for a clothesline of his own, but Rhino ducked. Roode went for another one, however, failed again as Rhino ducked that one as well. Followed by, Rhino executed a Gore when Roode turned around for to gain the pinfall.[4] After the match, Booker T entered the ring, shook hands with Cage and Rhino, and raised their hands to show a sign of respect. He then exited the ring, while Cage and Rhino celebrated their victory. Instead of heading to the locker room, Booker T picked up a steel chair, that was laying up against the ring, he then returned to the ring and cracked Cage and Rhino over the head with it, thus turning heel.[22]

After a backstage segment, the third Quarterfinal match took place between the teams of Kip James and Matt Morgan, and The Latin American X-Change (Homicide and Hernandez) (LAX), who were accompanied by Hector Guerrero.[3] It began with Homicide and Kip, as Kip taunted Homicide on how much of a height advantage he had over him, until, Homicide poked Kip in the eye to start the match. It was back and forth between the two teams from there on. LAX won the match, when Hernandez was bending over in pain after being kicked in the gut, Kip and Morgan both went for running kicks to each side of Hernandez's head. When they both came close Hernandez stood up straight as Morgan performed a bicycle kick on Kip by accident. Followed by, Hernandez performing a dropkick to Morgan, which sent him out of the ring to the floor, Hernandez then pinned Kip to advance him and Homicide to the Semi-Finals.[28]

Next was the final match in the Quarterfinals of the Deuces Wild Tournament between, the second determined team, B.G. James and Awesome Kong, and A.J. Styles and Super Eric.[27] The match began with B.G. and Super Eric. Super Eric and Styles controlled most of the match with Styles speed and Super Eric's kayfabe strength. Super Eric and Styles won the match when Super Eric tagged in Styles and then performed a Suicide-dive to outside the ring on Kong. Styles then tried to execute a Springboard Frog splash to B.G., who was laying on his back in middle of the ring, but botched the move and came crashing down to the canvas below. While Styles was face down on the mat, B.G. recovered and picked him up. Styles then locked in a small package to seal the victory.[5]

The debuting of TNA's newest innovation was next, The TerrorDome. The participants in the match were Johnny Devine, Curry Man, Kaz, Consequences Creed, Shark Boy, Jimmy Rave, Chris Sabin, Alex Shelly, Jay Lethal, and Sonjay Dutt. The winner of the match became number one contender to the TNA X Division Championship.[28] Before the match began, Management Director Jim Cornette told all the participants that the winner would get the future X Division Championship match, as well as take Angle's place in the main event.[5] The match was fast paced and included many spots. The beginning was dominated by Sabin and Shelly, also known as The Motor City Machine Guns, as they worked together to perform many different tag team maneuvers on each of the other participants. The finish came when Devine executed a double knee thrust to Kaz's mid-section from the top rope. Followed by, Devine trying to escape the cage. Kaz recovered quickly and followed him up the side of the cage. While Devine was hanging from the ceiling of the cage, Kaz grabbed a hold of his shirt and tried to make him release his grip and fall to the canvas below. Finally Devine released his grip and fell to the center of a crowd of the other participants. With everyone down, Kaz ascended his way to the ceiling and escaped through the small hole in the center to win.[29]

Team 3D fought Cage and Rhino in the next match and was the first of the two Semi-Final matches in the Deuces Wild Tournament.[5] It began with Cage and Ray. Team 3D were the dominate team in the equation, because of Cage and Rhino being kayfabe injurd from the chair shots by Booker T earlier in the night. Even though Cage and Rhino were injurd they managed to make some offense. With Cage performing a Driving crossbody block to Ray and Devon from the top rope to the outside of the ring, and Rhino performing many different power moves. During the final minutes of the match, Johnny Devine came down to the ring area with a kendo stick and gave it to Ray, while the referee was attending to Rhino and Devon, who were fighting in the ring. Rhino performed a Gore on Devon, when he went for the cover Devine entered the ring to distract the referee. Ray entered from the other side of the ring and hit Rhino hit with the kendo stick when he turned around. Followed by, Devon covering Rhino while the referee counted the pinfall.[29]

The next match was the encounter of Styles and Super Eric, and LAX, who were accompanied by Salinas and Guerrero, in the second Semi-Final match.[27] Homicide and Styles started the match off with fast paced moves and counters. During the match, Super Eric and Hernandez had a contest to see who was the stronger of the two, which ended in a draw. Towards the end of the match, Styles hooked Homicide up in a small package. while Salinas stood on the apron distracting the referee, which allowed Guerrero to come into the ring and reposition Styles and Homicide so the pin fell into LAX's favor. Salinas jumped down off the apron after Guerrero left the ring allowing the referee to count the pinfall, even though Styles shoulders were visibly seen to not be down.[3] After the match, Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan was show in attendance.[28]

Gail Kim faced Roxxi Laveaux in a Ladder match for number one contendership to the TNA Women's Knockout Championship at Sacrifice.

The TNA Knockouts Makeover Battle Royal for number one contendership to the TNA Women's Knockout Championship was the following match. The participants were Gail Kim, Roxxi Laveaux, Angelina Love, O.D.B., Jacqueline, Rhaka Khan, Christy Hemme, Traci Brooks, Velvet Sky, and Salinas.[4] The rules of the match state that it begins as a Battle Royal until it comes down to two, where they fight in a Ladder match to retrieve the contract for the future championship match. As soon as the bell rang, the knockouts started to try and eliminate anyone, anyway they could. The first woman eliminated was Salinas, by Laveaux, when Laveaux kicked her off the ring apron. The second was Sky, by Brooks, in the same way that Salinas was eliminated earlier. The third was Brooks, after being kicked in the back, by Love following her eliminating Sky, which caused her to fall over the ropes to the outside. Hemme was next, when Rhaka Khan picked her up and threw her over the top rope. Ironically, Rhaka Khan was the next eliminated, when O.D.B., Jacqueline, and Love over powered her and lifted her over the top rope, which caused her to fall to the floor. Next was O.D.B. and Jacqueline. Jacqueline was eliminated by Love, while O.D.B. was eliminated by Laveaux, by both being thrown over the top rope and falling off the apron just seconds after eliminating Rhaka Khan. Love then tried to eliminate Laveaux, but was unsuccessful as Laveaux used Love's changing run against her, by using a back body drop to throw her over the top rope and down to the floor. Now that the match was down to two, a entirely new match between Laveaux and Kim in a ladder match began. Before the match, the ring announcer, Dave Penzer, announced that if Kim lost, then because of her immunity from having her head shaved, that Love, since she was the last eliminated, would have her head shaved instead. During the match, Love and Sky kept interfering to help Kim win. Also in the match, Kim performed a sunsetflip powerbomb from the top of the ladder on Laveaux. While Laveaux executed a Spinebuster on a ladder with Kim. Kim was victorious when Love brung a ladder into the ring for Kim to use. Kim climbed the ladder and retrieved the contract to secure the victory while Laveaux was unconscious beside the ladder.[28] After the match, Kim tried to have Love's head shaved bald instead of Laveaux's, but she didn't succeed as Laveaux still had her head shaved, while Sky and Love laughed hysterically at ringside. During the shaving, "Fire Russo" chants broke-out throughout the Impact! Zone.

Kaz won the The TerrorDome to take Kurt Angle's place in the 3-Way Dance for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship against Samoa Joe and Scott Steiner at Sacrifice.

Before the next match, TNA showed live footage of the band, Saving Abel, at ringside. The Finals of the Deuces Wild Tag Team Tournament for the vacant TNA World Tag Team Championship was next, between Team 3D and LAX, with Salinas and Guerrero.[22] Before the bell was rung, Team 3D had a small conversation with Guerrero at the announcers table, as Guerrero was also the announcer for the Spanish broadcast team. When Team 3D made their way back to the ring, Homicide performed the Topé con hilo to the outside of the ring. Followed by Team 3D and LAX fighting around the ring area before the match officially began. When Homicide and Devon were both in the ring, referee Earl Hebner called for the bell as the match officially began. Mid-way through, Devine returned and set up one of Team 3D's signature tables, however, Guerrero saw what he was doing and went to investigate. Devine then tired to hit Guerrero with a kendo stick, that he held in his hand. Guerrero ducked, then punched Devine and stole the kendo stick and whacked Devine over the head with it. Guerrero moved the table and placed Devine on top of it. Ascended to the top and did a Diving double foot stomp to Devine through the table. Later on, LAX claimed victor in the tournament when Homicide pinned a weakened Devon after a frog splash.[29]

The main event of the night was for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship in a 3-Way Dance between, the reigning champion, Samoa Joe, Scott Steiner, and, Kurt Angle's replacement, Kaz.[3] Before the match began, Mixed martial arts fighter Frank Trigg joined Don West and Mike Tenay at ringside to do guest commentary for the match, also introductions were done for each of the participants.[28] It was dominated by many aerobatic techniques and submission maneuvers. During the match, Williams and Khan interfered on Steiner's behalf, by pushing Kaz off the top and by handing Steiner a led pipe to hit Joe in the head when he went for a suicide dive. Later, Joe recovered and entered the match again with a fury. At one point, Kaz and Steiner were fighting on the top rope, Steiner lifted him up and threw him down to the floor. When Steiner looked back into the ring, Joe ran and slammed his knee into Steiner's face. Followed by setting him up into the Muscle Buster position and performed the move to gain the pinfall.[29] Afterwards, Joe celebrated his first successful defence of the TNA World Heavyweight Championship as the event came to a close.[5]

Samoa Joe went on to retain the TNA World Heavyweight Championship in the King of the Mountain match at Slammiversary, becoming the first to ever do so.

Following Samoa Joe's second successfully defence of the TNA World Heavyweight Championship, he went on to defend the title again at Slammiversary, but this time in the King of the Mountain match (KOTM), against Booker T, Christian Cage, Rhino, and Robert Roode. Joe retained the championship for a third time and became the first to retain the championship in the KOTM.[6] Scott Steiner went on to train his new prodigy, Petey Williams, in his defence of the TNA X Division Championship against the number one contender, Kaz, at Slammiversary. With help from Steiner, Williams retained the X Division Championship, making it his first successful defence of the title in his second reign as champion.[7] As for Kurt Angle, he began a feud with his former Angle Alliance team member A.J. Styles. The two had a match at Slammiversary in-which Styles came out the victor, with help from Angle's wife, Karen.[6] Following their match, Angle and, Styles former tag team partner, Tomko viciously attacked Styles and left him bloody and bruised in the middle of the ring as Karen watched helplessly from the entrance ramp.[8]

The new TNA World Tag Team Champions, The Latin American X-Change (Homicide and Hernandez) (LAX), went on to have a small feud with Team 3D (Brother Ray and Brother Devon), which accumulated in a match between the two teams at Slammiversary. LAX came out the victors at Slammiversary, which marked their first successful defence as TNA World Tag Team Champions.[7]

Gail Kim had her TNA Women's Knockout Championship on the May 15 edition of TNA Impact!, Kim was unsuccessful, however, as she lost after Angelina Love interfered and pushed Kim off the top rope, while the referee wasn't looking.[30] This allowed Awesome Kong to gain the pinfall after an Awesome Bomb.[30] Following this and several other attacks on her and her friends by Love; Kim, with tag team partners O.D.B. and, the newly dubbed, Roxxi were all involved in a 6-Woman Tag Team match against Love, with her tag team partners Velvet Sky and Moose at Slammiversary. Which the team of Kim, O.D.B. and Roxxi won by pinfall after O.D.B. performed a Running Front Powerslam on Moose.[6]
