James J. Hill, The Empire Builder's civic legacy is the James J. Hill Reference Library in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota. This public business research library is open to the public and has online resources available.

Under the leadership of former Hill Library president Sam Richter (2001 – 2008) the Hill Library leveraged technology and expended to become a national business information resource for entrepreneurs and small businesses. Through these programs, the Hill Library serves millions of persons in partnership with the Small Business Administration (via the nation’s SBDC network), the Kauffman Foundation (via the FastTrac program) and dozens of other organizations. The Hill Library's online programs include:

BizToolkit -- an organized business Web that makes it easy for people to find information on all stages of business; free to users with a pro version available for $7 per month.

Biz Info Library -- an ever-growing collection of practical business articles from the nation's expert small business sources; free to users.

Virtual Advisory Board -- a vetted and reviewed forum for people to ask and answer business questions; free to users.

Sales Training -- a world-renowned presentation about how to find information and use it to improve sales effectiveness.

HillSearch -- watch the video; the Library's premium membership program providing small business access to the most powerful business search engine available.

HillResearch -- the library's professional research service.

HispanSource -- the nation's premier source of information on the US Hispanic community.

eInsight -- the site for the Hill Center for ethical business leadership.
