Daniel Thomas Murphy (born April 1, 1985 in Template:City-state)[1] is an American professional baseball player. A right-handed fielder and a left-handed hitter, he currently plays outfield for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball. He is a natural third baseman but started to play outfield due to the presence of David Wright on the Mets.[2]

Baseball career

Murphy was selected by the Mets out of Jacksonville University in the 13th round (394th overall) of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.[1] He spent the entire 2007 season with the Class A Advanced St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League.[3] In 2008, he was promoted to the the AA Binghamton Mets.[3] On August 2, 2008, a day after being promoted to the AAA New Orleans Zephyrs, the Mets left-handed reserve outfielder Marlon Anderson was placed on the disabled list, so Murphy was called up to the Majors.[2] In his first Major League at-bat, against three-time All-Star Roy Oswalt, Murphy hit a single. Later in the same game, he made a great catch against the left field wall, throwing out Hunter Pence at second base for a double play to end an inning.[4] Murphy got his first MLB RBI in his second game, against the Padres, with a run-scoring double.

The only players to be drafted as late as Murphy and to make the majors as quickly are Jim Thome and Albert Pujols.
