"Rehab"
Song

"Rehab" is the eighth single taken from Rihanna's third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007) in the US and the UK.[1][2] It has also gained some radio play in the U.S.[citation needed] It was written by Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Hannon Lane, with Timberlake and Timbaland contributing backing vocals in the bridge of the song. The song was also played during the commercial for the 2008 comedy-drama film "The Family That Preys".[citation needed] As of October 15, the song has officially entered the top 50 on pop radio.[citation needed]

Release

"Breakin Dishes" was supposed to be the eighth single from the album, however, releasing "Breakin Dishes" was scrapped and "Rehab" was chosen instead. "Rehab" was released to radio on October 7, 2008.[3] "Rehab" had already been slated for release in August, 2008 in the UK but was pushed back due to the digital release of "Disturbia." Even without the official release yet, the song has been starting to pick up on pop radio as of the end of September. It has been played on New York City's Z100 late September. It was the fifth most added song to radio in Australia, on its first week of release.[4]

It is also been regularly played on New Zealand radio stations The Edge, ZM and music television channels C4TV and Juice TV]- using the live in UK as the music video. It is popularised due to the fact that she will be performing three sold out concerts around the country with Chris Brown.

"Rehab" impacted on the European radio on October 20, 2008.

Critical reception

The song generally received negative reviews from critics as of now.

Bill Lamb from About.com was not impressed with the song, calling it "somewhat disappointing...." "....'Rehab' simply sounds too much like "What Goes Around..." Part 2."[5]

Entertainment Weekly gave the song a negative review, saying its "a joyless overdose of midtempo melodrama".[6]

Pitchfork Media said "Produced by Timbaland and co-written by Justin Timberlake, Rihanna's "Rehab" is a slight but solid entry into the rapidly-expanding Timbalake catalog. With its pillowy acoustic guitars and strings and rattling percussion, "Rehab" could hold its own against most of the second-half ballads from FutureSex/LoveSounds. But listening to the song, it's tough not to speculate how it might sound if Timberlake sang the whole thing rather than just the backing vocals. Timberlake's not Marvin Gaye or anything, but his falsetto is perfectly equipped to convey the track's plaintive, regretful sentiment. Rihanna, meanwhile...not so much. Here she comes closer than usual to depicting something resembling human emotion, but she still comes off sounding like a robot programmed to impersonate Alanis Morrissette."[7]

PopMatters said "There’s also a contribution called “Rehab” from the two Tims, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. You have to know, when “Rehab” begins with the violins and cellos, that J.T. is somewhere around—it’s like a remix of Timberlake’s own “What Goes Around”. Timber could’ve used it for himself, maybe as a b-side or a soundtrack item, but he let Rihanna have it, complete with his own background vocals, something like Babyface’s collaboration with Madonna on “Take a Bow” and “Forbidden Love” from Bedtime Stories. That’s awfully kind of you, J.T. Team Rihanna will go ahead and snatch that little gem, thank you very much. And, no, it’s not tax deductible."[8]

Rihanna and Justin Timberlake have filmed a music video for the song "Rehab" at Vasquez Rocks Park outside of Los Angeles on October 21, 2008. The video features Justin Timberlake. In one sequence Timberlake arrives on a motorcycle to meet Rihanna at her Airstream Trailer. Timberlake then takes a shower with red water and proceeds to get very up close and personal with Rihanna on the hood of a classic car. Other scenes included Rehab song performances, A Timberlake seranade with his guitar outside Rihanna's Airstream trailer, Timberlake playing a pinball machine and Timberlake laying on a giant rocket while playing guitar. In most of the scenes very bright Fuchia, Green and Blue lights were used to light the scenes. This will be a very stylized looking video. The director is Anthony Mandler. The premiere of the video is yet to be announced.[9] There is no new version, only cameos from both.
