Alexandra Margarita "Alex" Russo[1] (Selena Gomez) is the middle of the Russo siblings, and is main character of the series.[2] Alex, like her brothers, is part-Mexican, part-Italian.[1] Alex also loves shopping and fashion, she even tried to use her father's credit card when they switched bodies during wizard class. Alex also tried to cut wizard training to go to a clothing sale with Harper.

Her personality, ever since the beginning of the show, has been mischievous.[2] On several occasions, Alex reveals she is very conceited; once, when she drinks both halves of a love potion, she becomes obsessed with herself.[3] Even after the potion wore off, she expressed love towards herself by sending herself multiple amounts of flowers.[3] Alex is never shy when it comes to boys; she even goes as far as to kiss a random boy named Brad Sherwood :) to get back at Justin.[4] Alex claims everyone takes her advice as she knows a lot about fashion, relationships, girls, and guys, but above all she can be very sneaky and tricky.[4] Her best friend since childhood is Harper Finkle, and although she doesn't know that Alex is a wizard, she is still very loyal and supportive.[5] Her enemy since childhood is Gigi Hollingsworth, who had poured juice on Alex's mat at nap time and said she had an "accident".[2]

Alex is in the 9th grade.[6] She is also the stereotypical "daddy's little girl", where it is shown in several episodes that Jerry is overprotective of Alex.[7] Her "pout record" is four days as it clearly states in one episode [2].

Alex often uses magic to solve a problem, even if it leads to more disaster. To impress a boy named Riley, she calls herself his good luck charm and attempts to magically win the game.[8] She is very skilled at "Make-'em-Ups", when a wizard can make up their own emergency spell.[9] Riley had been Alex's crush for most of the first season, and had got him jealous by enchanting a mannequin to come alive and date him.[10] Dean (Daniel Samonas) is Alex's crush in the second season.[11]

Alex's Crushes

  • Brad Sherwood (Season 1)
  • Riley (Season 1)
  • Dean (Season 2)
  • Dimitre Oliveira (Season 2)

Justin

Justin Ednesto Russo (David Henrie) is the oldest of the Russo siblings, and the most mature.[2] Justin, like his brother and sister, is part-Mexican, part-Italian. [1]

Justin is, out of the three, is the most responsible.[8] He is very cynical and highly intelligent.[12] He likes opera, drinks tea, but loves comics and action figures.[10] He is allergic to cinnamon.[13] Justin truly cares about his siblings; this is seen when he risks losing his own powers just to save Alex's.[14] Only on one occasion has he used magic without permission, with Alex convincing him.[8] Although he had dated a pretty goth girl named Miranda (Lucy Hale) during the first season,[4] this has ended after he tries to impress other girls.[9][8][15][10] Alex's best friend Harper has a huge crush on him.[4] He later used magic to impress Kari Langsdorf, a pretty, yet slow girl by making himself look like a gifted baseball player.[8] He also harbored a crush on Millie, a new Sub Station employee.[15]

Max

Max Thomas Russo (Jake T. Austin) is the youngest of the Russo siblings, and the most naive.[2] Max, like his brother and sister, is part-Mexican, part-Italian.[1]

His older siblings often treat him as the nerd of the house though he isn't successful; in the contest to keep their powers as a wizard, the two exclude Max, believing that he won't win because he thinks "microwave popcorn is magic".[16] Very cheeky, he always attempts to "bend situations to his benefit", such has covering for his sister, in order to get new sneakers.[2] Max is a part of a soccer team.[4] He likes playing Nintendo DS and his wand acts like a Wii.[2] In "Potion Commotion", he gets his full powers, which causes havoc.[3] While Justin and Alex had learned lesson #372, Max was at #5.[3] The only spells Max uses is a pancake conjuring spell, a body-switching spell, a liquid levitation spell, and a spell to make him go through objects.[3] He uses all the spells with a wand.[3] Max prefers to cause havoc without magic,[12] and is quite mischievous (though more slow) as his sister.

Jerry and Theresa

Jerry Charles Russo (David DeLuise) and Theresa Gwen Russo (Maria Canals Barrera)[2] are the parents to the Russo children. Theresa is Mexican,[7] while Jerry is Italian.[1]

Jerry Russo is the average father. He is stern, protective and is constantly annoyed by his children. Unlike his children, he does not have powers. Nonetheless, his children inherited their powers from him. Jerry lives on Waverly Place, a street in downtown Manhattan with his mortal wife Theresa Russo and his children: Alex, Justin, and Max. In a few episodes, he has been known to call his wife, Theresa, old. He owns a sandwich shop called the Waverly Sub Station with her, where his children work, and, in one episode so did Alex's best friend Harper, although they only did it so they could be together more often.

Jerry is proud of his magical ancestry and teaches his children about the proper uses of magic in "Wizards Training Class" on Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, his children often disobey his magic rules, and he has to punish them. In the episode Alex In The Middle, it was revealed that Jerry won the competition for family wizard. He said that he beat Kelbo, but since wizards can't marry mortals, he gave his powers to Kelbo so he can marry Theresa.

Theresa Larkin Russo is a typical mother. She's fussy, caring and can be pretty embarrassing. Unlike her children, she is a mortal. Theresa lives in Waverly in Manhattan with her husband (and former wizard) Jerry Russo and her children: Alex, Justin , Max. She owns a sandwich shop called the Waverly Sub Station with her husband, in which her children work.

Theresa stated that she is a "Proud Latina" and tries to get her children to learn about her and their Mexican heritage. She used to play guitar for an all-girl mariachi band although she really couldn't play it.

Theresa is the reason why Jerry could not keep his wizard powers. Since wizards are not allowed marry non-wizards, Jerry gave up his powers to his younger brother Kelbo in order to marry Theresa. However, Jerry says he does not regret marrying her.

Harper Finkle is a fictional character portrayed by Jennifer Stone from the Disney Channel Original Series, Wizards of Waverly Place.

Harper Finkle is a typical 9th grade girl -- kind, smart, a bit dorky and a fashion lover. Her best friend is Alex, a wizard, unbeknownst to Harper.

Harper has a large and often obsessive crush on Alex's brother Justin, however, she is afraid of talking to him. In her mind Justin is her boyfriend, despite the fact that he has a girlfriend. Harper is jealous of Miranda, Justin's girlfriend, and claims that they look alike.

Harper is an avid fashion designer and makes a lot of her own clothes, most of which are not considered to be in style. She implied in one episode that she uses egg cartons to make some of her clothes. The clothes she does buy are also quite dorky such as a sunflower top and rainbow socks. Harper's outfits have also been known to match occasions -- in "New Employee", Harper applies for a job at the Russo sandwich shop, and goes as far as to wear a shirt with a sandwich on it, a headband with a plastic tomato and lettuce, and french fry earrings.

Harper is very confident in herself. Despite her unseemly fashion choices, she is not afraid to go out in the open, and believes that it is better to stand out as an individual. She is also a loyal friend, and is not scared to back Alex up.

Harper almost found out that Alex was a wizard in "Alex's Choice" and "The Supernatural".

According to an interview with Selena Gomez by J-14 Magazine "I think my best friend is going to find out that I have powers, so it's going to be interesting". Jennifer Stone missed 9 episodes due to her fliming of Dadnapped. Her last name, Finkle, was revealed in "Smarty Pants".

  • Justin Russo: Harper has liked Justin since the first episode, and seems obsessive over him, and is jealous of Miranda, his girlfriend.
