Steers is a quick service restaurant franchise originating from South Africa. It sells mainly flame-grilled beef and chicken burgers with soft drinks, chips and other sundries.

Steers' was founded in the 1960s when the founder of the company, George Halamandaris, visited the United States and decided that he would bring the fast-food concept back to South Africa. The first Steers restaurant opened in Jeppe, Johannesburg in 1970. The chain expanded, introducing drive-thru restaurants in 1997 and a delivery service from 2008. Steers is now found throughout South Africa and in seventeen other countries across Africa and southern Europe.

In 1994, the Steers Holdings Group was listed on the JSE Securities Exchange with shares hitting the board at 165c. As of 2006, these shares were worth 400c. The group was later renamed Famous Brands, which also includes other restaurant chains such as Wimpy, Debonairs Pizza, FishAways, House of Coffees, Brazilian, Market Café, Whistle Stop. Steers is the only home-grown South African brand within this group, however. Starting in 1985, Steers retail products, such as sauces, have been sold in South African supermarkets.

Products

Steers operates within the “higher end” niche of the South African fast food market, selling food that is typically more expensive and requires more preparation time.
Steers predominantly sells beef, vegetarian and chicken burgers, subs, sandwiches, french-fries (known as chips in SA), soft drinks, and desserts whilst putting much greater emphasis on combination meals and specials like the:

Breakfast on the run (Served in a Pita: Bacon, egg, cheese, tomato OR cheese, tomato, egg and caramelized onion)
Good Guy (A flame-grilled burger with chips)
Hunga Busta
King-size deal (Served on a bun with chips: Two flame-grilled beef patties, two slices of cheese, tomato and special Steers sauce)
Wacky Wednesday

Among South African consumers, Steers is well-known for its “Wacky Wednesday” special; a “two for the price of one” burger special that is only sold on Wednesdays. The exact nature of the “Wacky Wednesday” changes on a monthly basis.
