Croatan High School is a public secondary school in Newport, North Carolina. The high school is part of the Carteret County Public School System. It serves the westernmost third of Carteret County, including the towns of Peletier, Cape Carteret, Cedar Point and western half of the island of Bogue Banks which includes the town of Emerald Isle. Ethnically, Croatan's students are 92% White, 5% African-American, 2% Hispanic, and less than 1% other.[1]
Construction and Development
Croatan High School was built in conjunction with Bogue Sound Elementary School on a 90-acre (36 ha) plot of land overlooking Bogue Sound. The building was constructed in 1997 for about $14 million. Designed for 800 students, the student population has fluctuated around that number. Having received a bond of $3,320,898, a project began in December 2008 to build a new 700 seat auditorium.
Performing Arts
The Drama Department performs a play or multiple short plays each year. The Vocal Ensemble and Chorus have received numerous awards and citations, traveling to and performing in Hawaii, The Czech Republic, Austria,Orlando, and St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. The Drama and Vocal Music Departments sponsor the PAC (Performing Arts Club) and the All School Musical each year. They also co-produce a Christmas Dinner Theatre.
The Performing Arts Club sponsors three talent shows annually. The Junior and Upper division talent shows in the Fall cater from first grade through age 21 and are performed at the Crystal Coast Jamboree. The third is a school talent show held in the spring in the gymnasium. They also sponsor the All School Musical each year which have included in the past few years: Guys and Dolls, Hello Dolly, Cinderella, and Thoroughly Modern Millie. In 2009 Croatan will be producing Disney's High School Musical and in 2010 they will be producing The Wizard of OZ.
The Croatan High School Bands and Colorguard have consistently finished in high scoring places at events such as Bands of America. Recently they won their last marching competition of the season in Havelock. The Croatan Wind Ensemble annually goes to Contest which is held at Havelock High School by The North Carolina Bandmasters Association and receives high honors in the distinction of Level One performances.
Sport
The varsity football team competed in the 2008-2009 state playoffs. The team lost in the first round to Bunn High School. The Junior Varsity team tied the win-loss record of any JV football team in school history during the 2008-2009 season. Also for the first time in Croatan football history the JV team beat West Carteret with a final score of 28-22.
The Croatan Varsity Women's Basketball team ended the conference in 3rd place and ended with a record of 18-6. The team will participate in North Carolina's state play-offs for 2009.
The 2008-2009 season marked Croatan Wrestling's tenth consecutive conference title. The team also had ten individual conference champions in the same season. In 2009, nine wrestlers participated individually in the state competition.
Awards and Recognition
The U.S. News and World Report ranked Croatan among the top high schools in the United States, awarding the school a silver medal. [2]
