Lphant was originally a peer-to-peer file sharing client for the eDonkey network, first released in 2004[citation needed]. It was written in C# and required v2.0 of the .NET Framework on Microsoft Windows. Version 2.00 implemented support for BitTorrent downloads[citation needed].

On March 9th, 2009 Discordia, Ltd. acquired the Lphant.com domain name and released a software called Lphant v4, which uses the same name and elephant-like logo but only connects to the iMesh network. This follows the pattern of previous acquisitions respectively takeovers of P2P clients and their websites by Discordia, such as Shareaza and BearShare.

Features

Lphant 4 and later offer the ability to download music and video in several formats. For music, Lphant offers an unlimited download subscription of DRM-protected music as part of a monthly subscription[1] as well as the ability to buy songs permanently, as for example some titles of Sony BMG that can be bought as MP3 files.[2]. It is also possible to download for free legal content shared by other users. If a user quits the subscription service at any time, their ability to play any downloaded premium files (which have not been purchased) will be revoked.

The Lphant user interface is now identical to the iMesh family of clients[3], with the exception of some re-branding: iMesh icons, logos and banners have been replaced by Lphant graphics.[4]

Previous Versions

Lphant pre v4 (developed by Juanjo) is able to do download simultaneously from both eDonkey and BitTorrent sources for a single file[citation needed]. Also, it is able to download large files (greater than 4GB) on eDonkey and features EndGame mode as well as ICH (intelligent corruption handling).

Acquisition

On March 2009 Discordia Ltd. acquired the Lphant.com domain name from the project owners and released a new client entitled Lphant 4.

Lphant is no longer compatible with BitTorrent or eDonkey [5] and now connects to the closed and private iMesh P2P [6] network, providing social networking features, such as profiles, friend lists and instant messaging between its users.[7]. So, the only solution to this problem for those who want to continue using this P2P application is to reinstall the last version before this spoiled one, Lphant v3.51; it has been removed from the formerly official lphant site, but it still can be downloaded from several pages around the net. For the interested people: it may be easier to find it in other languages than in English.
