Question

Why is Canada marked in red? There are no confirmed deaths.

Answer

Because red means confirmed cases. Confirmed deaths are marked black.

Question

Well I read up on my history on the CNN it killed 50 million people during 1918-1919. The population has more then tripled, The best cure for it currectly is Tamiflu and Relenza. Their is currently no vacine for this illeness.

Question

I don't have the authority of this image anymore beacause i am a new user (26 April), ironically because i am the author. Wikipedia asked me to remove Alaska from the picture but someone else added it again.

please remove alaska and other region like island around spain etc.

Question

Maybe we should take a map that has the different states/provinces of the US, Canada an Mexico? Kloth (talk) 17:24, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Answer

No we better not do that because this is an global outbreak, but i've also made a map about the USA. check my user page for that map or the article about the outbreak in the USA cause i've added the map there allstrak

Clause

If you're going to include Alaska, then you must include French Guyana. The two are functionally identical within their countries. --Golbez (talk) 18:40, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Is it possible to generate a larger, more detailed map? –Juliancolton | Talk 21:29, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Answer

Yes, but there is no need to because it must be a thumb in the main N1H1 outbreak article. allstrak
Well, true, but it would be more useful at full resolution. –Juliancolton | Talk 23:47, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Can somebody who is very good with inkscape or so, add all the states of america in the map in stead of this one big blob? That will make much more clear.

UK still not red

Since there are 2 confirmed cases, the UK should be red (or at least Scotland)--Simonr9999 (talk) 18:09, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't really make sense for Northern Ireland to be red, since it's a separate land mass from Scotland where the two confirmed cases are. IMHO, only Scotland should be red. Adw2000 (talk) 12:49, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Additional comment: I added this info to the page, and map needs fixed.

The following countries need to be updated

Yellow:

Red:

Black

  • United States[10] (possible but unconfirmed, keep an eye on it)

Iceland: the two suspected cases turned out to be false alarms, so the country does not need to be yellow. --Cessator (talk) 21:10, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Change Mexico Back to Black

The color of the red is too close to the others and all the other maps have black as the death symbol. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Knowledgekid87 (talkcontribs) 18:59, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I second this, it is going to get very confusing especially if it comes to turning some of Europe red, and some dark red. We need vivid colours, not the pastels on use here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rob.derosa (talkcontribs) 19:44, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Again change mexico back to black, it makes it more confusing. Knowledgekid87 22:48, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

colours

suggest:

  • Blue - disproven cases
  • Yellow - suspected cases
  • Orange - confirmed cases
  • Pink - suspected cases + suspected deaths
  • Dark Red - confirmed cases + suspected deaths
  • Violet - deaths with confirmed infection

76.66.202.139 (talk) 12:21, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    • Seems like too many colors. I remarked on this below. I think that we should keep the three color scheme but change the black to something else. What about a blue, green, violet scheme? This is much less threatening. Hdstubbs (talk) 14:39, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

76.66.202.139 (talk) 05:01, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Choose different color scheme?

What about choosing a different color scheme? The red and black seems a little extreme. I agree that Wikipedia is not an emergency system or a health care provider (people shouldn't be getting their news entirely from here), but I feel that slowly making the world black as deaths accumulate is not socially responsible and adds to the overall feeling of panic. Now 2/3 of North America is a dire black and Canada is a deep red. Could we change the black to blue? Purple? Green? Hdstubbs (talk) 14:37, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I like the current color sheme.. it looks like the German flag jaja ;-) -- Grochim (talk) 14:59, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Black makes me think that everyone in that country has died - maybe I've been playing Pandemic II too much. It certainly isn't the best colour scheme. Smurfy 15:08, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good, I'm glad someone else plays Pandemic II (I've been feeling guilty about it.) Do we agree that we should change the color scheme? I don't know how to do this or I would do it. Hdstubbs (talk) 17:39, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I also agree. Black seems to be too threatening. Alhen ♐... 18:05, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I say leave it be, more threatening? Give me a break, also is the fact that about 5 other maps would have to be changed as well if anyone did change the black.Knowledgekid87 18:58, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that five maps have to be changed, but if we make the change then it is done. As more countries add deaths I still think that black is the wrong color for this map. I'm not convinced by 'give me a break' as a reason to not change it :). Hdstubbs (talk) 03:21, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I like my seven colour scheme suggestion (grey - no reports ; blue - false reports ; yellow - suspected cases ; orange - confirmed cases ; pink - suspected cases + suspected deaths ; dark red - confirmed cases + suspected deaths ; violet - deaths with victims confirmed to be infected) 76.66.202.139 (talk) 03:56, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

These colors are an insult to Germany. Kjidel (talk) 11:33, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We should keep the current colors. There are sixteen maps total, one of which is in twenty eight languages. When I add it up, we have forty-four things to change and half of us don't even know how to change them. If we wanted them changed, the time to do so was last week when there wasn't so much work already done. 96.18.217.236 (talk) 12:15, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just because it is a lot of work is not a good reason to have a less effective article. If we change the colors I can look up the colors in Babelfish. This article is getting a lot of traffic and we have many people working on it. I think we can spare some time to have one of the key pieces of the article, the map, as useful to people visiting the page as possible. Hdstubbs (talk) 12:35, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Lets leave this discussion with this note, most people who edit do not know how to change the maps. If someone wants to spend the long time and effort going and changing ALL the maps, they can do so provided a new color scheme is thought up first and agreed on.Knowledgekid87 14:45, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't want to make more work for anyone but I really think that changing from black is for the best. It looks better and, more importantly, it doesn't look like we are slowly destroying all life on Earth. Can we come to a consensus on this and then stick with it? It doesn't have to be deep red? What about red for death (serious but no as threatening, green for confirmed and yellow for suspected? Hdstubbs (talk) 18:22, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Colors of countries

Using the black color for countries in which deaths were detected is a bit "darkening" and overly alarming to my taste. Soon the whole world will be "blacked out", leaving white borders in between.

If it was the Spanish flu, wouldn't you say it would be appropriate? 76.66.202.139 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 12:10, 30 April 2009 (UTC).[reply]
Maybe, but this isn't the Spanish Flu. This isn't something that happened in 1918. This is happening today. And the connotation of black is not warranted by one death in the United States and less than two hundred in Mexico. Even if this was the article for Spanish Flu I would recommend changing the colors. Black is too melodramatic and is not in the spirit of a balanced collaborative communication about a particular issue. Hdstubbs (talk) 12:33, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Perú said it's case was finally negative, Costa Rica, Ireland and South Korea have initial positives not fully confirmed yet, so they should be yellow, and Hong Kong has a confirmed laboratory case, so it should be red. We put yellow for probation. Stop coloring South Korea red until it is confirmed. You cannnot make assumption over something hasn't yet confirmed. Besides, color Russia to yellow. Kadrun (talk) 19:08, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't colour anything,I don't know how to do it. Actually I agree with you. No cases have been proven for South Korea, Costa Rica and Ireland. They just have initial positives that need final laboratory confirmation, so they should be yellow for the moment. And Peru had a previous initial positive that turned out to be negative, soy it shouldn't be red either. Please someone fix it so the map will be more accurate.
