Arda Turan (born January 30, 1987 in Bayrampaşa, Istanbul, Turkey), is a Turkish footballer currently playing for Galatasaray and the Turkish national team. Already a regular in the Fatih Terim's Turkish team at the age of 22, he currently has 30 senior international caps. In July 2008, Arda was ranked 8th in the selection of the 100 Best Young Football Players in the World as published by Spanish magazine Don Balón.[1]

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger is said to be a big admirer of the player and Arsenal would be likely to lodge a bid, however, Arsenals financial situation means that they are unlikely to be able to afford the player. [2] The summer 2009 transfer window see's him linked to a number of English Clubs such as Manchester United and Tottenham, with the most recent being Everton.[3]

Galatasaray

He is a product of the Galatasaray youth system, but initially came to light once being on loan to Manisaspor in the 2005/06 season. He was recalled the for the start of the following season, and made a regular start in the first team. It was during this time that he received his first senior international call up. Arda quickly impressed manager Eric Gerets with his performances early in the 2006/2007 season. After his stellar performances in the Champions League qualifiers which led Galatasaray to the group stage, Arda became a first team regular.

Arda continued his development in the 2007/2008 season. Despite a poor start to the season, Arda improved his performances immensely, scoring 7 goals in the second half of the season after failing to score in the first half. Three of his goals came against Sivasspor on May 4, 2008, a match which virtually ensured Galatasaray the championship. Following his impressive displays domestically, Newcastle United made a £9m offer to buy Arda prior to the Euro 2008 championships, but the Galatasaray chairman rejected the offer.[4] Since the European championships, AC Milan, Juventus, Everton F.C.[5] Arsenal[6] and Bayern Munich,[7] have declared their interest but again, Galatasaray have refused to sell their prized asset.

International Career

Arda made his debut in the 2-0 friendly victory over Luxembourg in August, 2006, having caught the eye with his performances for the U19 and U21 teams. He scored his first international goal on May 25, 2008 in a friendly against Uruguay.

Arda featured in nine of Turkey's twelve qualification matches for Euro 2008, and starred in the finals of the tournament itself. He scored two vital goals during Turkey's progression to the semi-finals. His incredibe performances meant he caught the attention of many of europes top clubs.

Playing Style

The new golden boy of Turkish football, Arda Turan is a crowd-pleasing winger. A one man show of tricks, speed and perfect balance, he is known for his forays down the left flank, but he is capable of featuring on the right and can also be employed in central role.

Arda is ultimately a player who embraces such skill, that enables him to destroy a team within the blink of an eye and from a moment when it is least expected. This is seen evidently with performances against the Spainish football team in the WC10 qualifiers where he performed a slick skill enabling him to go past Sergio Ramos and Marcos Senna despite being trapped in a tight position.
