Tense used

Currently, there is a use of the past tense that could lead to the impression that he is dead.I am reluctant to change it myself, because I cannot rule out that this (otherwise unmentioned) possibility is true, and because the tenses taken individually are not necessarily incorrect (e.g. depending on whether his parents are dead or have sold their businesses).
