The Department of Atomic Energy in collaboration with University of Mumbai have set up the
Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS), that offers undergraduate science education and research opportunities. It aims at improving at the quality of basic science education in the country at undergraduate level and developing a pool of scientists for the various scientific works of the country. Dr. R Chidambaram,Principal scientific advisor to Govt. of India gave the opening talk on september 17, 2007 that marked the start of the Institute. It is an autonomous institution governed by the governing council headed By Secretary of Dept. of Atomic enrgy, govt of Indiaand Vice-Chancellor of University of Mumbai.

Classes and labs are being held at Health centre building of University of mumbai and also atHomi Bhabha Centre for science education(HBCSE),TIFR. Anna Bhau Sathe guest hause of University of Mumbai functions as student hostel till its own campus comes. Universty sprts facilities are also available to the students.
== 3. ACADEMIC OFFICE: ==
The Academic Office of the institute exists to facilitate, initiate and co-ordinate the academic work of the Institute, particularly the teaching and assessment of students. == 4. ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES: ==
The various programmes currently offered by the Institute are: * Integrated M.Sc. in Physical sciences. * Integrated M.Sc. in Biology sciences. * Integrated M.Sc. in Mathematical sciences. * Phd in Physical sciences. * Phd in Chemical Sciences. * Phd in Life Sciences. * Phd in Mathematical sciences.
Very soon the institute plans to start Int. MSc programme in Chemical sciences and Computer science. The students studying in Undergraduate courses at CBS are selected through an All India exam conducted by the Department Of Atomic energy, Govt. of India namely National entrance screening test (NEST) which happens to be the joint Exam for the Undergraduate programme at NISER, Bhubneshwar. The graduate students are selected by interview subject to certain criteria in the masters degree.
== 5.DEPARTMENTS AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES: ==
The institute at present has 6 departments which are: a. Physics b. Mathematics c. Life sciences d. Chemical sciences e. Computer sciences f. Archeo-astronomy Various research work being carreid out at CBS in close association with Institutions like TIFR, BARC, Institute of Chemical technology(University of Mumbai) etc. are in nuclear physics, astrophysics, archeo-asronomy, free electron lasers, biophysics, genetics, cell and developmental biology etc. This institute made University of Mumbai to become the first university in India to add a new gene to world gene bank in early 2009. Also the research work being carried out on Harrapan civilasition city of Dholavira, GUJRAT in association with Univ. of Washington, TIFR and IMSc,chennai is first of its kind in India.
== 6. MENTOR INSTITUTIONS AND FACULTY: ==
CBS is one of the many institutions set by govt. of India to improve the quality of science education in the country. Luckily it was setup in Mumbai, the most metropolitan of all cities in the country. This city boasts of world renowned scientific institutions like TIFR,IITB andBARC. Most of all they happened to be its mentor institution since it is a dept. of atomic energy set up. This gives a major boost to the institution in achieving the goal it has set for itself and the country. Scientists and professors from these institutes and Univ. of Mumbai and its colleges have designed and given courses to the undergraduate students of the institute. This has helped in lifting the standard of science education imparted at CBS.Hopefully this insitute will attract bright students towards science and research career.
