"22"
Song

"22" is the fourth worldwide single from British pop singer Lily Allen's second album It's Not Me, It's You.

Critical Reception

Mayer Nissim of Digital Spy awarded the song 3 stars and wrote:

Thankfully, she's now taking a break from her ceaseless Twittering to release '22', the third single from her sophomore album It's Not Me, It's You. A song about a Bridget Jones-type everywoman, albeit five years younger and much more angsty, it features some of Allen's best ever lyrics. "It's sad but it's true how society says her life is already over," she sings, pondering a girl in a dead-end job, approaching 30 and still dreaming of Mr Right. It's a shame, then, that the track is undermined slightly by Allen's nursery rhyme melodies, which were original and quirky in 2007 but are now starting to lose their charm.[1]

Music video

The "older" Lily as seen in the music video for 22.

The music video for "22" was shot in East London on June 1 2009. The British papers Daily Mirror and Digital Spy reported that Allen was wearing a chocolate colored dress, sporting her new short hairstyle and performing with 20 dancers.[2] During filming, Rick Edwards from T4 followed Allen and documented the making of the video. The programme was shown on the 11th July, with the first screening of the finished video afterwards. [3]

The video first shows Allen walking in the bathroom of, presumably a club. She sings the first verse into the mirror surrounded by women fixing their hair and make-up. Although her reflection sports immaculate make-up and a blunt fringe with neat hair, the real Allen is shown to have smudged make-up and messy hair. The younger looking reflection judges the older scruffy-looking Allen raising the question "Where did it all go wrong?". The women surrounding her then join her in the singing of the song. During the bridge, the women disappear and a man swoops Allen into a dance around the central sink unit. Near the end of the song Allen reverts back to her young pristine look, with her older, scruffy counter-part now in the reflection. Realising this is what to come of her in the future, she leaves the bathroom in disgust. [4]
