History

Guilford Young College was formed in 1995 having been established by the Archdiocese of Hobart, the Christian Brothers, the Dominican Sisters, the Salesians of Don Bosco, the Sisters of Charity and the Sisters of Saint Joseph. It was established after a restructuring of the Catholic education system in southern Tasmania, which saw a number of Catholic high schools drop their senior secondary (years 11 and 12) classes in favour of creating one senior secondary college. Its creation fulfilled the vision, originally articulated by Archbishop of Hobart Sir Guilford Young, to build a Catholic Senior Secondary College in Hobart, which would provide excellence in learning for our young men and women within a community of faith. The College was commissioned to continue the great traditions and the spirit of the founding orders and the Colleges which had contributed to its foundation.

Guilford has two campuses, one in Hobart, and one in Glenorchy. The Hobart Campus used to be part of St Virgil’s, and the Glenorchy Campus used to be part of Dominic. Hobart Campus’s main Building, A Block, was built in 1911. H block was built in the 1950’s, and J block was built in 1973. Hobart Campus used to a Cemetery. In 2008/2009 the Hobart Campus is undergoing an extensive building program, including a new catering suite, uniform shop, photography lab, classrooms, computer labs, and a Gym. A Theatre is also planned.

The Hobart Campus is situated on Barrack Street, Hobart, flanked by Brisbane and Patrick streets. Originally the first campus of St Virgil's College this beautiful campus overlooks the Derwent River and the City. The main building is called the Administration Block housing the campus office, Careers room, board room, staff room, subject co-ordinators offices and the chapel. Adjoining the Admin Block is the Joyce Block, named after Br Joyce a Christian Brother at St Virgil's College. It houses the science labs, AV rooms, library and undercroft. To the rear of the Joyce Block is the Hessian Block. it houses computing, English, catering, the art rooms and drama and music in the PAC (Performing Arts Centre). Parallel to the Joyce and Hessian blocks is the Murphy Block, which houses Electronics, Wood & Metal Workshops and automotive. To the rear of the buildings is a soccer oval and staff/student car park. There is also tennis courts between the Admin Block and Patrick Street.

Building Program

The Hobart Campus is currently undergoing a building program. The new catering suite, uniform shop and adjoining classrooms are nearing completion.

The Hessian building will have the entire lower floor converted into a comprehensive Information and Communications Technology (ICT) learning suite. There will be a significant number of additional computers in this area. The floor plan will be flexible in that it will be able to be sectioned off into smaller spaces with glass sliding doors, or it can be kept open, depending on the need. The ICT support staff will also be relocated to this area. The top floor of Hessian will see the enlargement and modernisation of general purpose classrooms, and also improved photography and art spaces.

The Murphy building will be completely transformed. All equipment in the Automotive workshop is to be relocated to the Glenorchy Campus where Automotive courses will be consolidated. This will enable the workshop to be converted into a new Design and Technology centre. The existing wood and metal workshops will be developed into a new fitness and games centre. In effect, it will become a mini gymnasium with the opportunity to play indoor games and it will have fitness equipment on the mezzanine level. This will be well-received by the Recreation and Health, Sport Studies and Personal Fitness classes, not to mention their teachers. It will mean less time travelling off campus to access facilities.

A Theatre complex is also planned, This would no doubt be a facility that would be an asset for all the local Catholic Colleges to access and enjoy.

Education Reforms

Guilford Young College is responding carefully to the Government’s ‘Tasmania Tomorrow’ education strategy, and is avidly pursuing links with TAFE and the University of Tasmania to strengthen their offerings and further advantage the students.

Guilford Young College in collaboration with our Association Catholic Colleges in the South and a number of private training providers is actively pursuing Commonwealth Government funding to support the establishment of a Southern Tasmanian Catholic Colleges Trade Training Centre. If successful, this will open up training and qualifications avenues for student in all the Associated Catholic Colleges from Year 9 through to year 12 at GYC. In the initial stage, the suite of training packages will offer General Construction, Hospitality, Hairdressing, Engineering, Horticulture and Automotive, in addition to GYC's selection of VET courses. The aim is to add to these. Training pathways will be available to all students in the Associated Catholic Colleges and on both Campuses of GYC.
