List of emoticons

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by NDCompuGeek (talk | contribs) at 01:13, 5 November 2009 (tables fix, copyedit). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This is the list of emoticons for every situation. The items in the list are the most notable and commonly used emoticons, or textual portrayals of a writer's mood or facial expression in the form of icons. The Western use of emoticons is much different than the Eastern use, and Internet forums, such as 2channel, show expressions in their own ways. In recent times, graphic representations, both static and animated, have taken the place of traditional emoticons.

Western

The emoticon in Western style is written most often from left to right. Thus, most commonly, one will see the eyes on the left, followed by the nose and mouth. Typically, a colon is used for the eyes of a face. However, an equal sign, a number 8, and a capital letter B are also used interchangeably.

Graphic emoticons

Graphic emoticons are small images that often automatically replace typed text. These are commonly used instead of the older text variants, especially on Internet forums and instant messenger programs.
