Sketching is a technique that enables one to display his or her creativity through the medium of visual art. It is about observing something and converting the same into a perfect and accurate sketch. Cartoons can be sketched using all sorts of techniques. Every cartoonist or artist draws his own traditional cartoon character which he has in his mind. Generations of adult and children love this form of art. There are number of things to be considered when sketching a cartoon, like the penciling, drawing, coloring, composition, framework, papers and surfaces and other drawing aids. [1]

Sketching tools

For base drawing a cartoon a pencil is often used. The type and hardness of pencil used may vary from according to the cartoonist and their way of drawing a particular character or a scene. Anything drawn by this pencil can easily get erased during inking. Some artists use a soft pencil for a more elaborate emphasis. According to a renowned cartoonist[who?], if one wants to create a finished cartoon, then it is recommended that he uses the soft pencil.

For colour, pens are used.

Fountain pens have a sharper nib, so can be used to concentrate towards the minute details of the subject.

Dip pens are still used, with various types of nibs to maintain different line qualities.
