The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the illustration workshop. Anyone can make a request for an illustration to be improved or created for a Wikipedia article. Clicking the "New Request" button will bring you to a standard template for submitting requests, as well as general advice that should be followed.

    Advice to requesters

    All requests:

    • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
      • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
    • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
    • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

    SVG requests:

    • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
    • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

    World Scout Emblem

Article(s): World Scout Emblem, multiple others

Request: Trim away extra white/colored space, thank you. I know it says don't ask for a bunch at once, but since it is the same basic process for each, I thought I would ask... Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 13:14, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Graphist opinion:

Will do some of them. I'm more focused on the SVGs and PNGs, so anyone else may take over the JPG rasters. ZooFari 06:08, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! Um, with the Plast one, removing all the blue reduces visibility. Perhaps a thin blue border? Thank you! Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 06:48, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed. Is that okay? ZooFari 15:43, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Those are all the PNGs I could do. Anyone ese may take the rest. ZooFari 22:48, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Finished thank you so much for these!

Sorry, started vectorizing without request taking notice. --Justass (talk) 04:06, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
NP. I've upped my version as well, haven't added text yet though. A warning about the jpg is that the Microsoft icons are probably non free, so don't base car, bus, train on them. /Lokal_Profil 13:04, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Found an image which precedes both of ours (and the request here) thus teaching all of us the worth of looking before asking/looking before doing/categorising and linking to vector versions from the original =) /Lokal_Profil 13:07, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
eee, very sorry. I did take a look around (I had thought). I think the water top in SVG2 is a great idea since it makes it look like an underwayter tunnel and not just a sky. I also like the measurements! Thank you. gren グレン 15:58, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I think all four involved parties (me included) missed something. The preexisting image wasn't correctly categorised meaning I only found it by mistake. So measurements from SVG 1, water from SVG 2? Think wehicles from SVG 2 as well to avoid the Microsof icons issue./Lokal_Profil 19:07, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request: This Gray's image is important for the articles that it is contained in. However it doesn't appear very clear, for example the Inferior petrosal sinus can hardly be distinguished. And the text is difficult to read. Is there anything that you can do? Thank you very much in advance!! Captain n00dle\Talk 11:41, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Signature of Nicolaus Copernicus

    Article(s): Nicolaus Copernicus

Request: Convert to a decent SVG version, not autotraced. Connormah (talk) 04:04, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Graphist opinion(s):

Never mind,. it looks good. It's just that some autotraces round too many corners..etc. Connormah (talk) 17:31, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't that what we want? It's scratchy and some smoothing would benefit. ZooFari 20:41, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I must admit I'm at a loss to understand why anyone would want to replace a perfectly good 4 kB PNG with a 28 kB SVG (which gets delivered as a 13 kB PNG to the client at that size anyway). --RexxS (talk) 02:22, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with RexxS. You are not really gaining anything with the signature being scalable. The source is the PNG, so there is no way that the SVG can have any more accurate detail than the PNG. It is also an approximate autotrace, so that the SVG product is already an inexact copy of the original. We may give the illusion that the SVG has more detail/information because you can zoom in. But what you are zooming in on isn't any accurate information not already contained in the PNG. RexxS's point about size and thus bandwidth is also very pertinent. SVG is great for things that actually need to be scalable that are vector based to begin with (a linedrawing of a signature, I'd argue, isn't vector based). SVG is also good for things that need to be editable by other users, such as labels, graphs, diagrams, charts, captions, schematics, etc. I don't see how SVG would be preferred in the case of someone's signature, as not only would I argue that the content is raster based to begin with, but also I do not see the benefits of ediability/scalability showing in a depiction of someone's signature. Anyway, my 2 cents. Sorry for the rant ;) -Andrew c [talk] 16:15, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Anyone?!?!?? - Jameson L. Tai talkguestbookcontribs 22:58, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): You're going to have a hard time finding anyone who will vectorize this (convert it to SVG) because the images are quite distorted due to the nature of embroidery. And most Wikipedians still won't vectorize because it's non-free (it's a copyrighted image). If you can find a better image, please let me know, but otherwise I can only wish you the best of luck. I'm wondering if an image map like this one: Template:Metabolic pathways would be a good idea. If no one here has the time/effort I will be happy to do this if you let me know :-)

If possible, .svg would probably be preferable to .jpg too.

Thank you very much in advance! Best regards, Captain n00dle\Talk 19:22, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Baseball.svg Should be useful for the first image There are more free svg baseballs at the Open Clip Art Library [1], [2], [3].
As for bats File:Baseball bat.svg looks quite good. And File:Tennis stub.svg could be used as a basis for the puzzle piece layout. /Lokal_Profil 14:50, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Diagram of Cultural Properties of Japan

    Article(s): National Treasures of Japan

Request: I am currently expanding the National Treasures of Japan article (see here). In order to grasp the various types of cultural properties and designations, a schematic diagram like this (page 34 upper diagram) or this (page 4) would be very helpful. It would be great if a graphist could create such diagram. The generic terms (tangible/intangible/folk cultural properties, monuments,...) should be distinguished (by color or so) from the designations (Important cultural properties, national treasures,...). It would be nice to have the top designations (national treasures , special historic site, special place of scenic beauty, special Natural Monuments) distinguished (by color or so) from the lower grade designations. If necessary for readability, the small texts explaining what is included in the categories could be skipped. bamse (talk) 18:18, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request: This is an image that should definitely be an SVG and is probably trivial to convert.
