Pacifica High School is a high school in Garden Grove, California and is a member of the Garden Grove Unified School District. It first opened on September 5, 1965, on the site of an old pig farm.
History
Pacifica High School first opened its doors in 1965, and since then Pacifica has enrolled more than two thousand students each year.[2]
One of Pacifica's most valuable landmarks on campus is the Navy Anchor that sits in the quad, which was painted blue. The anchor was a donation which was made by the U.S Navy.[2]
Traditions
Pacifica holds various events that have become a tradition to the students at Pacifica High School. One of the most noted events is the annual senior only event called, "Adopt-a-Child" [2] Seniors would buy presents for their assigned child during the month of December. Later that month, students would gather in the school gymnasium and wait for their assigned child and spend the day seeing the joy of opening presents. Seniors have said that this experience has phenomenal and that they would do it again.
Almost every year, the senior class donates something to the school. Senior classes donated things such as the repainting of the Pacifica High School gymnasium, and message boards.
Publications
Simply known as the Yearbook Class or Publications, students are submerged in a business working environment. The staff of "The Reef" (School Yearbook Name) work throughout the year whether its taking photos, writing copy, or interviewing people at major school events such as Football Homecoming Game.
The objective that the staff holds is very important, because each student is able to design their own yearbook pages. Pages are assigned by either the editor, or the advisor. The staff places emphasis on good writing skills, reporting skills, and photography skills. The staff learns how to use programs such as Adobe Indesign CS3, Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended, and sometimes Adobe Illustrator CS3. These programs are used in desktop publishing in the business world.
As of April 2009, "The Reef" received high honors for their cover creation whose theme was, "Make it Big" Selected to be on Cover's Book Edition 2009 distributed by Jostens to various schools across the nation. A panel of judges at Jostens rates each high school's yearbook and unlike the "Look Book" , very few entries make the Cover Book Editions.
Athletics
Pacifica's sports teams are called the Mariners, and compete in Empire League of the California Interscholastic Federation's Southern Section. Prior to 2006, they competed in the Garden Grove League with the other schools in the district.
Pacifica's softball team is a perennial state (and often national) powerhouse, winning CIF Southern Section titles in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004,and 2007. They won the mythical national championship in 1997.
The Mariner football team has won five consecutive league championships, and reached CIF Southern Section championship games, losing all, in 1978, 1996, 2002 and 2007. The school has been a football powerhouse since the mid-1970s. Former head coach Bill Craven is among the five winningest coaches in Orange County history.
Pacifica's boys basketball team won the CIF-SS III-A championship in 1994, and finished runner-up in the state Division III playoffs, losing to Grant of Sacramento in the title game. It was a rare moment for PHS, which for decades had been a basketball doormat.
The boys soccer team played in the CIF-SS 3-A championship game in 1978—the first PHS team to play in a CIF title game—losing in eight overtimes to Calexico. Two years later Pacifica won its first title in any sport, beating Aviation of Manhattan Beach, 3-2, in the CIF-SS 2-A boys soccer final. CIF Player of the Year Russ Burdeno scored two goals in the game. Tom Cook had the game winning assist to Pizzano as the Mariners rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit.
The first CIF-SS championship girls team was the girls soccer team, which beat Camarillo in the 1984 final. The team went 144 league games without a loss, a CIF-SS record. The streak ended in the 2007-08 season.
Hosted the Los Angeles Lakers in the school's first year, the Lakers had an exhibition game in the gymnasium.
Orchestra
The Pacifica High School Orchestra in 2004-2005 received a unanimous superior at the SCSBOA Regional Festivals, held at Norwalk California. In that same year, the high school orchestra also received a superior at GGUSD (Garden Grove Unified School District) Orchestra.
Marching Band, Drumline and Cheer
Pacifica High School Marching Band has a long history of celebrated performances including several in the Rose Parade in the late 1970s. The band competes in the WBA (Western Band Association) circuit as a AA classification where they have been a finalist several times, including their latest finals appearance in 2006.
In 2005-2009 and in 2003, The Pacifica Marching Band's Drumline took the SCPA (Southern California Percussion Alliance) gold medal, and in 2006-2009, took the WGI (Winter Guard International) World Championship gold medal in the PSO (Percussion Scholastic Open) division, along with numerous first place finishes throughout Southern California. Pacifica also finished with an SCPA Bronze medal in 2004 and a WGI silver medal in 2005. The Pacifica drumline is only the second ensemble to ever capture four consecutive WGI World Championship gold medals. The first was Franklin Central who captured 5 consecutive gold medals in PSCW (Percussion Scholastic Concert World) from 1998-2002 WGI Hall of Champions.
Pacifica's Junior Varsity cheer team, 2005-2006 and 2006-2007, won USA Spirit Nationals in the division. The team competed against the top five teams in the division and won first place. Varsity took second place in 2006-2007 in the division at USA Nationals. Varsity competed against the top seven teams in the Large Varsity Intermediate division.[citation needed]
