Motti Malka
Motti Malka is the current mayor of the southern Israeli city of Kiryat Malakhi.[1] Malka is a member of the 'Mayors for peace network'.[2] An organization which aims to promote peace at a local, and civil society level across the world.
Following a 2009 ruling by rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, that Shabbat elevators[3] are a violation of Kashrut, the municipality of Kiryat Malakhi feared a rapid rise in the Charedi community. In response to this Malka and the city engineer launched a plan to entice young secular couples to the city, centraly through a new 'secular-only' apartment blocks in the city. The planned neighbourhood will include 2800 apartments, 530 cottages (being built largely for Gush Katif evacuees), eight kindergartens, an elementary school, a high school, a youth cultural center, religious institutions, a commercial center, a park, a playground, a clinic and two daycare centers. The neighbourhood is also being planned as a luxury development with an apartment in the project is expected to cost up to NIS 800,000]].[4]The development will be among the first of its kind in Israel.
He was first elected in the Municipal elections of 2003,[5] beating the Likud incumbent by a conformatable margin. In the municipal elections of 2007 Malka was reelceted with 84% of the vote for the Kadima party.,[6]
