Vettaikaran is a Tamil feature film directed by B. Babusivan who with Vettaikkaaran makes his debut as a film director. The film is produced by M. Balasubramanian and B. Gurunath Meiyappan. The film is released by Sun Pictures. The film will star Vijay and Anushka Shetty in the lead roles. Gopinath will be the film's main cinematographer and V. T. Vijayan as the film's editor. The film was launched in February 2009 and the shooting for the film commenced the following month.

The film's background score and soundtrack, composed by Vijay Antony, was released on September 23, 2009. Vettaikaran was released on December 18, 2009.

Cast

Plot

Ravi (Vijay) is in Tuticorin. He aspires to become a cop like police officer Devaraj (Srihari), his role model. After great effort, he manages to pass plus two and he joins a college in Chennai. During the course, he meets Suseela (Anushka Shetty) and falls for her instantly. Thanks to her grandmother, he succeeds in wooing Suseela. In Chennai he takes up his studies in a college and also earns his living plying an auto rickshaw. It is here that his life takes a turn.

He comes across a baddie Chella (Ravishankar) who tries to play spoilsport in the life of his classmate Uma (Sanchitha Padukone). Ravi bashes him up. His troubles start as Chella's father Devanayakam (Salim Ghouse) with the help of greedy police hatches a conspiracy to kill him in a special encounter. It is now a cat and mouse game between the two .

Box office

Vettaikaran which released on December 18 has taken best ever three day opening due to a record number of 16 screens in the city. The film, which opened in the number one slot, has taken a good opening, but carries mixed reports. [1]

Production

Development

During the filming of Kuruvi, directed by S. Dharani, B. Babusivan served as one of his prominent assistant directors in the film and wrote the dialogues. Sivan was later prompted to begin his maiden directorial venture with Vijay in the lead role. He was eventually chosen as the director for the next feature film to be produced AVM Productions. The project was announced in August 2008 with the title Vettaikkaaran taken from the 1964 Tamil film starring M. G. Ramachandran.[2]

Until after the Vijay-starrer Villu released in January 2009, Vettaikaran was formally launched the next month at the Vinayagar Temple, a privatized Hindu temple located in one of the studios of AVM Productions. The film's director Babusivan, producers M. Balasubramaniam and B. Gurunath Meyyappan, Vijay and his wife, Vijay Antony, S. A. Chandrasekhar and director Dharani were present at the film's inaugration.[3]

Casting

Perarasu and Hari were mentioned, but later, AVM Productions chose B. Babusivan to be the director of the film.[4][5]

Several actresses were considered to essay the lead female role with Shriya Saran, Tamanna Bhatia,[6] Ileana D'Cruz,[7] Bhavana Balachandran, Asin Thottumkal,[8] Nayantara,[6][7] and Anushka Shetty[9] being considered for the role. Afterwards, Anushka Shetty was finalized to portray the role. Vijay Antony was favoured for the music composer position, who recently scored for the film Kadhalil Vizhunthen and received many accolades for "Nakka Mukka", which was regarded as one of the best songs composed in 2008. Cinematographer Gopinath was chosen to be the lead cameraman in the film after Ravi Varman was dropped out from the film.[10] V. T. Vijayan was also signed as the film's editor while Milan has been signed to serve as the film's art director.

Filming

Filming for Vettaikaran began on March 9, 2009 The filming took place in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh where the film's title song was choreographed and filmed with Vijay, his son and 100 junior artists.[11] A stunt sequence was filmed in Alwarpet and adjacent areas. An action scene involving Vijay was choreographed along with stunt artists. The song "Puli Urumudhu" was filmed in the south side of Chennai and Madurai.

The film's soundtrack was released September 23, 2009 at Lady Andal School.[12]It was released by S. Shankar and K. S. Ravikumar, while the function was attended by K. Bhagyaraj, Sibiraj, Srikanth, Nakul, Karunas, S. Dharani, Karthi, Vishal and Perarasu. Many other actors and actresses as well as directors, producers and music directors were present at the function.The album became one of the chartbusters of the year
