Sergio González Soriano (born November 10, 1976 in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Catalonia), commonly known as Sergio, is a Spanish footballer who currently plays with Deportivo de La Coruña, in the Spanish first division.

He is a hard-working central midfielder, adept at both defence and playmaking.

Club career

An RCD Espanyol youth graduate, Sergio played his first Spanish first division match on April 10, 1998, in a 2–0 home win over CD Tenerife. He was an undisputed starter in the next three seasons, totalling 104 matches.

Looking for greater challenges, he accepted a move to Deportivo de La Coruña in the summer of 2001. In his first season with the Galicia outfit, Sergio played all 38 matches and added four goals, as Depor finished runner-up and won the Spanish Cup, and would only miss eight combined in the following four, amassing over 300 overall appearances during his stint.

International career

Sergio was first called to the Spanish national team in March 2001, for a 2002 World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein and a friendly with France.

He was part of the nation's final stages' squad, having a substitute appearance, in the 3–2 triumph over South Africa. Sergio also appeared 13 times for Catalonia, a record.
