Show-Ya

SHOW-YA (しょーや, Shōya) is a female heavy metal/hard rock band from Japan.

Formed in 1982, the band won a musical grand prix sponsored by Yamaha, which resulted in a record contract with Toshiba EMI. Their debut album Masquerade Show was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, and was promoted by Coca Cola. After a successful release, they returned to Abbey Road to record their second album Queendom the following year. In 1987, the band was approached by producer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones) who requested to work with the band. Relocating to the United States, this collaboration led to the albums Immigration and Glamour being recorded. At this time, Show-Ya became associated with acts such as Vixen, and Lita Ford.

In 1989 they recorded Outerlimits with Beau Hill, which became the bands best selling album; with sales exceeding 600,000. They were featured on the cover of the Los Angeles Times in 1990, and were considered the all-female version to popular Japanese metal bands Vow Wow and Loudness. In February 1991, lead singer Keiko Terada left the group, as she considered the band was becoming too mainstream orientated; having a difference in musical direction, she started a solo career. The band recruited singer Stephanie Borges and continued the tour of their 8th album, Hard Way. In the same year, the North Korean government invited the band to perform, and the historic two day concerts were heavily covered by the Japanese media. On January 4, 1992, they performed theme music at Starrcade 1992 in Tokyo Dome for a match between Sting and The Great Muta and The Steiner Brothers. In 1995, they released their only album with Borges, Touch The Sun. At the end of the tour in 1997 Borges left, to be substituted by the singer Yoshino. Show-Ya produced a mini-album in 1998, after which the band officially disbanded. Show-Ya reunited in 2005 with Keiko Terada back as lead vocalist, in time for the 20th Anniversary shows. [1]
