Jacmel Airport (IATA: JAK, ICAO: MTJA) is the sixth airport in Haiti in passenger traffic is located near the city with the same name, Jacmel, on Haiti's south coast. The airport runs on timezone GMT+5.0 and is located in World Area Code (WAC)#238.

This airport is served by scheduled and charter airlines from Port-au-Prince. The airport was opened in 2006 and allows travel from there to Port-au-Prince and to other destinations across the continent.

The airport is currently under the control of the Canadian Forces in the aftermath of the 2010 Haitian Earthquake.[1]

Facilities

The airport is able to handle smaller commercial aircraft, but not large aircraft.[2]. However, a C-130 Hercules aircraft can land with utmost difficulty. Prior to the 12 January 2010 quake, there was no control tower at the airstrip, and its ramp area could only accommodate five aircraft at a time, [3] the runway also did not have lights,[4] and with no control tower, no radar to go with it. As such, it can only support good weather daylight operation.[5]

History

2010 7.0 earthquake

The airport was first used by Canadian CH-146 Griffon helicopters, on 14 January 2010, in scouting the area for relief efforts, prior to the arrival of the force to be deployed in Jacmel.[3] It became a focus for relief flights by the Canadian military utilizing CC-130 Hercules cargo aircraft, in lieu of the larger CC-177 Globemaster III that cannot operate here, due to its large size.[2] Canadian soldiers started arriving on flights on Tuesday 19 January 2010 at the airport.[6]

Canadian forces at the airport are fitting a lighting system to allow day and night operations, to decongest Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, by taking some flights. Radar control of the area will be staged off HMCS Halifax, anchored off the coast, near Jacmel's port.[7]
