Michael Lee S. Rankine (born 15 January 1985) is an English footballer who plays for York City as a striker.

Rankine began his career with the Doncaster Rovers youth system, before playing for Armthorpe Welfare and Barrow in non-League football. He moved to Football League team Scunthorpe United in 2004, but after only scoring one goal for them, he signed for Alfreton Town. He joined Conference National team Rushden & Diamonds in 2006, where he played for three seasons, before signing for York City.

Career

Born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire,[3] Rankine started his career with the Doncaster Rovers youth system.[4] He later played for Armthorpe Welfare and he joined Barrow in the summer of 2003,[5] but he was unable to play for them in the opening game of the 2003–04 season after suffering whiplash following a car crash.[6] He made 15 appearances and scored seven league goals in the 2003–04 season,[2] with nine goals in all competitions.[7] Rankine signed for League Two team Scunthorpe United on non-contract terms on 16 September 2004, following a trial at the club,[8] after having made 11 appearances and scored three goals for Barrow up to that point during the 2004–05 season.[9] He scored the winning goal for Scunthorpe on his debut in the 89th minute at Bury, which gave his team a 1–0 victory.[10] He started for Scunthorpe in a 3–1 defeat to eventual Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup third round in January 2005,[11] after which he was given the shirt of Côte d'Ivoire striker Didier Drogba.[12] He scored only one goal during the 2004–05 season, in which he made 24 appearances.[13] He signed a new six-month contract with the club in June.[14] Rankine rejoined former club Barrow on a month's loan in August,[15] and after scoring two goals, it was extended for a second month in September.[16] During the second month, he was recalled by Scunthorpe, due to injuries at the club,[17] meaning he finished the loan period with 11 appearances and three goals.[18] He was reported to have joined Lincoln City on trial in December,[19] but this claim was rejected by Lincoln manager Keith Alexander.[20] He later joined Conference National team Altrincham on trial and scored for their reserve team.[21]

After his contract at Scunthorpe expired, he had a period with former club Armthorpe Welfare to help his fitness, before joining Alfreton Town in January 2006.[22] He finished the 2005–06 season with 24 appearances and three goals for Alfreton,[18] after which he was offered a new contract in May.[23] However, Rankine joined Conference team Rushden & Diamonds on a one-year contract in July, after being on trial for three weeks.[24] He made his debut in a 1–0 defeat to Crawley Town on 12 August,[25] which was followed by his first goal in the following game, a 3–1 defeat to Grays Athletic.[26] He next scored with two goals in a 3–1 victory over League One team Yeovil Town in the FA Cup first round in November.[27] He signed a new four-year contract with Rushden in March 2007, which contracted him at the club until June 2011.[28] He scored a hat-trick against Weymouth on 3 April, with two goals in the last five minutes, to help Rushden to a 4–1 victory.[29] He finished the 2006–07 season with 44 appearances and 11 goals for Rushden.[30] Rankine played for Rushden in the Conference League Cup final against Aldershot Town on 3 April 2008, and scored a goal on 120 minutes, ensuing a 3–3 draw and a penalty shootout, which was lost 4–3.[31] He finished the 2007–08 season with 47 appearances and 14 goals for Rushden.[32][33] He joined League Two team Bournemouth on a month's loan on 8 October 2008,[34] after having made eight appearances for Rushden up to that point during the 2008–09 season.[35] He made his debut in a 0–0 draw with Rotherham United and he finished the period with four appearances.[36][37] Bournemouth were hoping to extend the loan, but Rushden wanted him to return.[38] He scored two goals for Rushden in a 9–0 victory over Weymouth on 20 February, who had been forced to field a youth team.[39] He finished the 2008–09 season with 35 appearances and seven goals for Rushden.[40]

He joined York City on a two-year contract on 12 June 2009 for a fee of £10,000, with York's Craig Farrell moving in the opposite direction.[41] He made his debut in a 2–1 defeat to Oxford United on 8 August.[42] He scored his first goal for York after winning and scoring a penalty kick in a 2–0 victory over Forest Green Rovers.[43]

Style of play

After Rankine signed for Bournemouth, manager Jimmy Quinn said "He's big, he's strong and I'm pleased to get him in".[44] York manager Martin Foyle said Rankine "will also work hard, close down and give us a presence in the final third. He's a good size, mobile and will certainly run the channels."[45] He has the "ability to hold the ball up, and cause the defenders problems" and is in possession of the long throw-in ability.[46][47]

Personal life

Rankine is the nephew of former player Mark Rankine.[4] He was arrested along with York players Michael Gash, Michael Ingham and Craig Nelthorpe in August 2009 following an incident involving two other men at a Subway outlet on a night out.[48] The four appeared at York Magistrates' Court on 14 January 2010 after being charged with affray.[49]
