The Biggest Loser: Couples 3 is the ninth season of the NBC reality television series entitled The Biggest Loser. The contestants are competing to win a $250,000 prize, which will be awarded to the finalist with the highest percentage of weight loss.

The season premiered on NBC on January 5, 2010 and tallied its best premiere rating ever, powering NBC to the adults 18-49 ratings win for that night. Biggest Loser: Couples was up 2% from its January, 2009 premiere to a 4.6 adults 18-49 rating. It was the top adults 18-49 rated Biggest Loser premiere and tied the second best rating for a non-finale. It scored a total 11.68 million viewers.[1]

After Episode 6, The Biggest Loser will take a break for the 2010 Winter Olympics, with Episode 7 airing on March 2, 2010.[2]

Episode Summaries

Week 1

First aired January 5, 2010

11 teams of couples—siblings or cousins or spouses or parent-child—are chosen this season, and this is the largest, sickest bunch of contestants yet seen on the show. Twin brothers John and James (484 and 485 pounds, respectively) break the team record with a combined weight of 969 pounds. Michael becomes the first contestant to weigh-in at over 500 pounds. Five contestants start out at over 400 pounds, tying the record from the prior season.

Once the contestants arrive on the ranch, Allison announces their challenge; each team must together complete 26.2 miles on stationary bikes. The Green team wins and gains immunity, and the Blue and Yellow teams finish last and are immediately sent home, but they will be back at the ranch in 30 days and the team with the greatest percentage of weight loss will return to the ranch. One person is forced to drop out of the challenge early: Cherita of the Blue team is pulled off her bike by Dr. Huizenga due to severe cramps, and Michael from the white team was treated for exhaustion after completing the challenge.

At the first weigh-in, the Purple team won first place with an 8.09% weight loss and Patti lost 23 pounds (9.4%), a record for the largest weight loss in a week for a female contestant. Michael lost 34 pounds, a record for the largest weight loss in a week by any contestant. The Brown team finished last, with a total weight loss of 4.75% (each twin losing 23 pounds), meaning one of them must be voted off by the other contestants. When making their cases, each brother pleaded to be voted off himself and to have his twin kept on campus. John pleaded for the others to allow James to stay due to James' bad knee—he needs the doctors and expert attention at the ranch. James argued that he has a pool at home in which to work out, and also the financial ability to take off work and dedicate his time at home entirely to his recovery and weight loss, whereas if John went home, he would have to return to work right away and have personal obligations to his wife and children, decreasing the time he would have available to devote to weight loss. James was eliminated by majority vote.

In the update segment, James had lost 100 pounds over two months; in addition, he has inspired his wife, and she has lost 24 pounds during that time.

Week 2

First aired January 12, 2010

Dr. H. meets with the contestants, and hands each team an envelope with a "medical task". White (Michael) was told to "watch a normal-weight man simulate what you're going through." Dr. H has Bob put on 303 pounds of weights ("fake fat"), and Bob talks about the pain and difficulties associated with that much extra weight. Purple was told to "watch a special message about how your health is hurting more than just yourselves." Dr. H. shows a video of himself meeting with Patti's daughter/husband and Stephanie's sister/dad. He says Patti's diabetes is as bad as any he's ever seen and that Stephanie is following in her footsteps and will have diabetes even earlier. The red team was told to "find out your true cost of being overweight." They discuss some of the things they can no longer do – among them riding horses and scuba diving (Lance previously worked as a commercial diver; his increasing weight left him unable to retain his certification, costing him his source of income), and an armored truck pulls up to show the two of them $3,000,000, which is how much their job would earn them over the next few years. The orange team is told to "Watch how your old, unhealthy diet affects a healthy person." Jillian shows them what they would normally eat during one day, and she has to eat one of their "meals". There are nachos, quesadillas, burritos, processed foods, hydrogenated oils. After a few minutes, she says she can't eat it anymore and spits it out into the trash.

The challenge involves a pool, and Maria tells the camera she's afraid of water and doesn't know how to swim. Each team has a balance beam 3.5" wide and 40' across. As a team they need to take 10 beach balls across; if they fall in, they have to start over. The winning team gets immunity and the losing team gets a 2 pound penalty. The red team is able to win immunity, however, Maria is afraid of water. She tries to cross at one point and loses her balance, only to jump over to the side of the beam, instead of going in the water. She is then taken to the hospital, later diagnosed with a fractured nose and ring finger. Jillian works her the next day to try to help overcome her fear of water and avoid future problems. Dr. H. then meets with the teams and goes over 3D MRI results (including the contestants' "inner ages"), similar to previous seasons.

At the weigh in, red starts things off and Melissa again says she wants to keep her numbers as low as possible. She gains a pound and Bob calls her on it, and she admits she was holding back in order to have more for next week. Gray is the first non-immune team to weigh and loses 17 pounds (2.34%). Pink loses 13 and places 0.01% ahead of gray. Green needs more than 11 pounds and gets 12, making them the new leader. Purple needs 11 and gets 7, so they are currently in last (down from first place in week one). Orange needs 8 pounds to beat purple; they get 10 and are safe. Brown goes solo next and John needs 7 pounds; he gets 10. Black is second to last; they need to get 11 to beat purple and get 15. White wraps up the weigh in and Michael is nervous. With the two pound disadvantage, they'll need to lose 14 pounds or more. They end up losing a combined 21 pounds, giving them first place for the week. With purple in last, the other players choose to send home Stephanie or Patti, and Patti ends up leaving in the end.

In the update segment, Patti is now 200 pounds, has been able to be removed from eight different medications, and works out with her other daughter and takes dance lessons with her husband. She did a 5K run with her family on Thanksgiving morning. In addition, her goal is to be off all medications by the finale.

Week 3

First aired January 19, 2010

Ali meets with the teams and says that it's "student and teacher week" – one person on each team is the teacher and the other is the student. Only the teachers will see Bob and Jillian – their job is to take everything they learn from Bob and Jillian and pass that along to the student. The students will not see Bob and Jillian during the week; in addition, the student's weight loss is the only one that will count toward elimination. The remaining members of the Purple (Stephanie) and Brown (John) teams are teamed for this competition.

The decision of who will be student and who will be teacher will be decided by a temptation. The teams are shown two huge piles of M&Ms. The temptation consists of rounds, only one team member can play, and if a team chooses not to eat they will not participate. The Red team chooses not to participate. In round one, everyone avoids eating until the very end, when Sherry (Pink) and Michael (White) eat an M&M, advancing to round two. In round two, only Sherry eats an M&M so the Pink team wins and gets to choose teacher and student.

They discuss between themselves with no input from the other players and decide as follows: Andrea, Stephanie, Sam, Melissa, Migdalia, Cheryl, Michael, and finally Sherry will be the teachers. Darrell, John, Koli, Lance, Miggy, Daris, Maria, and Ashley are the students. The students are then dismissed. Migdalia (green) is very upset about the choice of whose weight will count. Bob and Jillian say they need to "knock the chip off her shoulder" – she needs to avoid alienating herself. They meet with the teachers and tell them what they want the students to do in terms of working out and nutrition; what machines are best, how much to do, etc.

For the challenge, the teachers will unravel 1000 feet of ribbon through a playground and then the students will draw for which ribbon they have to untangle. The first to recover the ribbon wins immunity for their team along with the ability to switch the positions of student and teacher for one other team, which the winning team doesn't have to reveal until the weigh-in. There's a time limit for tangling up the ribbon as well; pink and white don't quite use up all their ribbon, but white is very tangled so no one wants that ribbon. When they finish the tangling, Ali announces that they won't be drawing for ribbons… they will untangle their own ribbon blindfolded, with guidance from their teacher who can't touch the ribbon or the student. Lots of teams have difficulty because white ribbon is entangled with the other ribbons in many places, but Red (due to Lance's ability to move around in pitch-dark conditions due to his commercial diving experience) and Gray are in the lead and in close competition, with Gray ending up on top.

At the last chance workout, Bob and Jillian comment that now they also need to prepare the teachers to give the students a last chance workout, with the wild card of gray team. Michael is shown joking around and appears to be slacking and a lot of the others are noticing the lack of effort. At the weigh in, gray team announces that they decided to switch white team. They say Michael hasn't done a lot and he hasn't shown a desire to want to be here, so they want him to know it's time for him to work.

Gray weighs in and pulls great numbers (3.38% combined) despite having immunity, saying that they are making a life commitment to change (not just using immunity to slack off). Green is next gets a combined 3.23% (with virtually identical weight loss) and 3.20% for Miggy. Black needs more than 11 pounds from Darrell to be safe; he loses 12 (3.22%) and they get a combined 2.91% loss. Daris needs 10 pounds to be safe; he loses 9 (2.90%) and they get a combined 3.08% (Cheryl gets 3.33%). John needs 14 pounds to be safe and he gets it (3.10%) while Stephanie gets 7 pounds (2.88%).

The red team comes up next; Melissa says she's thinking, "The only number that matters is Lance." He needs 10 pounds and gets 12 (3.57%) while Melissa only loses 1 pound, putting her back to her weight after Week 1. Melissa says that she's having problems after her Week 1 success, while Jillian (joined by Bob) accuse her of sandbagging for the second week in a row; what follows is a giant shouting match between the three. Ali ends it by asking Lance if had any comments, he responded; "I don't have a damn thing to say," visibly upset at the accusations made toward Melissa.

White is next and Michael now needs 14 pounds to be safe; he loses 10 (2.08%) but Maria only loses 4 (1.55%) so the switch actually helped them, even though it wasn't enough. Pink is last and Ashley needs 8 pounds; she loses 12 (3.48%) and Sherry loses 6 (3.06%), putting them in second place. Michael and Maria are up for elimination; Maria asks to go home. Although both John and the Grey team accuse Michael of slacking, the Grey team respect Maria's request while John and Stephanie vote for Michael. The Red team casts the final vote, stating that they are respecting Maria's request, and asking the other teams that, when Red falls below the line, they want their requests respected as well. Maria is eliminated.

In the update segment, Maria, weighing 230 pounds, says that her goal is to overcome her fear of the water when she goes home and plans to swim in the ocean at her next family vacation.

Week 4

First aired January 26, 2010

Ali starts the week with a chance to win immunity at a pop challenge, the first time immunity has ever been offered at the start of a week. The winning team also wins three envelopes that can affect the outcome of the game. The challenge is to run a one mile loop to get a keycard, which they can then put in a machine. If the machine shows a green check, you get a point; if a red X, no point. The first team to get three points wins the challenge. On the first go, red and black get a point. By lap three, yellow, brown and pink have a point. Pink gets two by lap four. Gray and orange get on finally, then white and green. Purple has no points at lap nine. White gets two points and so does orange and red. At lap 10, red gets their third check and wins immunity.

They are given three decisions to make, one at a time. The first is no access to the gym, second is no elimination vote, and the third is a two pound disadvantage. They can split the cards between teams or give one or more to a single team; they have 15 minutes to decide. They give no gym access to John since he doesn't need the gym much - he can still use the pool. They give no vote to Michael and they say it's because "some of us said some things last week to Michael because we don't want you to take it out on anyone this week." They then give the two pound disadvantage to green and green doesn't even let them explain. Lance says that it was because "they were hoping for the rollercoaster effect" - that green wasn't as high last week so they were hoping they would be able to manage with it this week.

Ali meets the teams for another challenge. Each team has a cage attached to a rope, and the job is to lift the cage 120 feet up. The winning team gets phone calls from home, plus they get to choose three other teams to get phone calls. Gray takes the lead with red in second and close behind. The other teams all appear to be less than half as high. Red surges at the end but gray ends up winning. Sam is crying after winning and saying their motto is "family first." For the other three teams, they choose red (for giving them a fight). They choose green because a son has a birthday coming up and Migdalia's husband is going to be deployed to Afghanistan. For the final team, they choose brown since he's all alone with strangers and has a son at home. On Miggy's call she tells her fiancé, "I might be home sooner than you think." Migdalia tells her husband, "I want to go home!"

Prior to the weigh in, Ali recaps the red team's handiwork this week: "Because of you John couldn't go to the gym, Michael can't vote, and green gets an extra two pounds." Jillian tells the camera that the "something wrong" with Melissa is going to be cured by peer pressure. Red is up and Melissa loses 11 with 6 for Lance. Melissa says it was stupid to lose the weight since they were immune, but she "couldn't do game play." Michael is up next, and says he wants to show the others he deserves to be there. He loses 15 pounds, or 70 pounds in four weeks. Black needs over 20 pounds as a team to beat Michael; they only lose 15. Orange needs over 11 to be safe and loses 12 (only .01% ahead of black), with both falling below a milestone (300 and 200 pounds). Pink needs 13 pounds and gets only 11, putting them at the bottom. John needs 10 pounds to be safe and he gets the necessary 10. Gray team expresses concern since they did well last week; they need 15 pounds and have another huge week of 26 pounds, putting them in the lead. Stephanie goes next and needs just 5 pounds; she loses 6. Green is the last and with the 2 pound disadvantage they will need to lose 12 pounds. Both look pissed off, Miggy tells the camera, "As soon as I stepped on the scale, I knew we weren't going to make it." They look pissed off and convinced they have already failed. The final tally is 1 pound for Miggy and 4 pounds for Migdalia. Melissa is smiling, and Lance says, "It wouldn't have mattered anyway." Melissa then says, "Hey Ali, just so we're clear, two pounds didn't make a difference." Miggy has some choice words for Melissa and then tells Migdalia, "Don't cry." Jillian is ticked about that attitude and says the stress helped them to fail.

Migdalia tells everyone she wants to go home - "Just write my name down. I've got my kids at home and my husband at home; I want to go." Black is a bit upset that they didn't share their feelings about why they want to go. Melissa tells the others, "Let's remember where the vast majority of the drama and bad aura have been coming from." Red says they're sick of Miggy and votes for her. Migdalia calls her on it and says, "You're always the first one to talk." Orange honors their wish and votes Migdalia, as does pink and purple. Gray team says it hurts to hear Migdalia like this, and they "believe it's their emotions getting the best of them." They vote for Miggy. There appears to be an alliance between red and gray at this point. John says he had to do what he felt was right, and that "none of us have learned all they need to know." He votes for Miggy as well. Black says they wish Migdalia would have shared her heart in the five minutes she had, as it would have made things easier. However, they still vote Migdalia.

Migdalia says she's ready to move on and her mom needs the help more. She says she's "happy with herself." "America, next time you see me, I'm going to be 140 pounds and I'm going to be a sexy mommy!" At the check in, she is down to 219. She says she gained 10 pounds when she first went home, because of her husband leaving. After he left, she "started working hard again". Her goal is to run a marathon with her husband when he returns from Afghanistan.

Week 5

First aired February 2, 2010

The episode begins with a flashback to Migdalia's elimination from the previous episode. Miggy is obviously crushed by the loss of her daughter and states that it feels like she has lost a part of herself. Late that night, an ambulance is called to campus for one of the contestants; it is later revealed to be Miggy, who had appendicitis and needed to have her appendix removed. After the surgery, her physical activity is extremely restricted; she is told that all she can do for exercise is walk. She is also informed that an extra 8-9 pounds of saltwater was been pumped into her body after her operation. Despite the multiple obstacles, Miggy is determined to do well, and says that if all she can do is walk, she will "walk to Puerto Rico."

The Blue Team and Yellow Team return to weigh-in for a spot back in the game; the Yellow team wins the weigh-in and also receives immunity for the week. The Yellow Team also receives another reward: the only vote at that week's elimination.

Michael beats the Grey Team in the challenge and also receives immunity. He weighed in at 443, only 17 pounds shy of losing 100. John fell below the yellow line; as he was playing alone for the Brown team, his elimination was automatic and no vote was required, disabling the reward of the Yellow Team.
