When a MAGLEV train in Caprica City is blown up during a terrorist bombing, two men — Daniel Graystone (a wealthy computer engineer) and Joseph Adama (a lawyer with roots in the Tauron mob syndicate called the Ha'la'tha) — struggle to deal with the loss of their loved ones in the attack. Before the bombing, Zoe Graystone, her friend Lacy Rand and Zoe's boyfriend Ben Stark are in the holoband world at the V-Club planning their trip to Gemenon, and preparing to meet their new family there. As Daniel becomes increasingly reluctant to accept the loss of his daughter, Zoe, and Joseph the loss of his daughter and wife, Tamara and Shannon, it isn't long before their fundamental views about life and death become a source of conflict. Daniel asks if Joseph knows anyone who could help him "obtain" a meta-cognitive processor currently produced by a Tauron competitor Vergis Corporation to help him complete his prototype robot in time for a demonstration of its capabilities to his military client. At the end of the demonstration when asked what the robot is called, Daniel calls it a Cylon, or Cybernetic Lifeform Node. As a gesture of his gratitude, Daniel creates an avatar of Joseph's daughter Tamara, which Joseph meets in the holoband world.

Zoe's ties to the prototype Cylon she was downloaded into leaves Daniel frustrated as to why the meta-cognitive processor won't function in any other bodies; Daniel instructs two lab assistants to transport the Cylon to his personal lab at his home. When they arrive at the Graystone residence, they find the Cylon reacting hysterically in the back of the transport vehicle, but one of the lab assistants is able to calm the Cylon with Zoe inside. Meanwhile, as Sam Adama teaches his nephew William about the shadier facts of life, Amanda Graystone begins learning a whole life she never knew about her daughter, leading her to make a startling assumption, and a controversal public statement at a memorial ceremony for victims of the bombing. Lacy accepts an invitation to lunch at the home of Sister Clarice Willow where she learns that Sister Clarice is part of a group marriage with multiple wives and husbands, which later she is accused of trying to seduce Lacy with her younger husband.

The Graystones face the wrath of angered Capricans after learning Zoe may have been involved in the train bombing. Meanwhile, Joseph wants to visit his daughter's avatar in the holoband world again, and both Joseph and his brother Sam pay Daniel a visit. Daniel also realizes he can't deal with his grief in private. Sister Clarice continues to befriend Lacy by volunteering to be Lacy's confessor, stating she was Zoe's confessor who shared everything with each other. Sister Clarice visits a mysterious contact in the holoband world. Zoe's avatar and Lacy are able to meet with each other in the holoband world V Club after the avatar discovers a room that Daniel created, finding the Tamara Adama avatar and enabling her to wander off on her own. Joseph and Daniel also return to the holoband world only to find his daughter missing from the room; they assume that her avatar was erased, leading Joseph to make a personal request from his brother. Young William Adama is spending more time with his uncle Sam, and is discovering more about his uncle's day to day events. [5]

As the fallout from Zoe's involvement in the MAGLEV bombing grows, Daniel prepares to defend himself and his company on the hugely popular talk show Backtalk with Baxter Sarno. His plan to distance himself from Zoe finds him alienating Amanda, who is still reeling from her own public detractors. As Daniel steps in front of the cameras for show time, Amanda arrives at the studio, with no intention of staying backstage. Sarno asserts that the holoband world contributes to users acting out their agressions, contributing to acts of terrorism in the real world, which Graystone Industries profits from. Daniel then announces in the interview that all future access to the holoband world will no longer incur a charge, offering the service for free. After ordering the death of Amanda Graystone, Joseph is wracked with a heavy conscience and desperately tries to stop Sam from carrying it out, but hitman brother Sam is already closing in. Agent Duram uses his GDD (Global Defense Department) resources to circle closer and closer to Sister Clarice and the youth of the STO, executing a search warrant at both the Athena Academy and the Graystone residence, leading to Lacy and Keon working together and possibly into an unexpected romance. Before the school is searched, Sister Clarice receives an anonymous tip on an E-Sheet to the search and controversal equipment is removed.

The avatar of Tamara Adams wanders the holoband world, scared, lost, and unaware that she died nearly a month ago in the MAGLEV bombing. Falling in with a group of gamers, Tamara discovers a new side to the holoband world - New Cap City, a place where people live random lives of violence and crime in search of the game's elusive meaning. Forced into aiding a digital crime spree, Tamara befriends a young gamer, until she discovers a devastating secret that threatens everything she knows. Tamara also discovers that she has unique abilities that other inhabitants of the holoband world don't have. Joseph, realizing he hasn't been emotionally present for Willie's grief, tries an impromptu fishing trip to bond with his son. The trip reveals new layers of torment for Willie and leads Joseph to the conclusion that, for both their sakes, he may need his Tauron roots more than he realized. Joseph decides that a Tauron memorial should take place so that he and his son, along with family members can come to terms with Shannon's and Tamara's death. Daniel, after his public promise to forego future holoband profits, finds himself fighting for his professional life, and suggests that the company take a new direction. The result is that the board of directors decided against removing Daniel as CEO.
