The word wolf (wolves in the plural) commonly refers to larger members of the dog family of animals. Wolf/wolves most properly refers to the species called the Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) and all of its many subspecies, except the domestic dog and the dingo. Some experts have suggested that the following four subspecies of Canis lupus be recognized as separate canid species:
- Eastern Wolf (North America)
- Himalayan Wolf
- Indian Wolf
- Red Wolf (Southeastern USA)
