Dear America is a series of historical novels for older children published by Scholastic Press between 1996 and 2004. The series was originally cancelled in 2004 with the release of the final book, Hear My Sorrow, however the series will be relaunched in Fall 2010. Each book is written in the form of the diary of a young woman living during an important event or time period in American history. The Dear America series covers a wide range of topics, including: the Pilgrims' journey to the New World, the Salem Witch Trials, the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, western expansion, slavery, immigration, nineteenth-century prairie life, the California Gold Rush of 1849, the Great Depression, Native Americans' experiences, racism, coal mining, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, the fight for women's suffrage, the sinking of the RMS Titanic, the Battle of the Alamo, the Vietnam War, and more. The breadth of historical topics covered in these books through fiction makes the Dear America series a favorite teaching device of history schoolteachers around the country.

Controversy
My Heart Is On the Ground: The Diary of Nannie Little Rose, A Sioux Girl, Carlisle Indian School, Pennsylvania, 1880 by Ann Rinaldi has been criticized for the historical and cultural inaccuracies, "Indian" stereotypes, and the author's overuse of literary license with regards to historical fact. Though not portrayed as such, the Carlisle Indian Industrial School (the setting of the story) was an experiment where hundreds of children died from disease, abuse, malnourishment, and escape attempts. Rinaldi is also criticized for taking the names from the headstones of children who died at the school.[1]
The Girl Who Chased Away Sorrow: The Diary of Sarah Nita, a Navajo Girl, New Mexico, 1864 by Ann Turner has also been criticized by the same organization as Rinaldi's above mentioned book for being stereotypical and culturally inaccurate.[2]
