Superficial is the debut studio album by reality television star Heidi Montag. The album took three years to complete. Musically, it incorporates elements of synthpop. The album was released independently and digital-only.

Background

Superficial was three years in the making.[1] The album was self-funded and cost almost $2 million to record.[2] Explaining the title of the album, Montag said,

"I've been called superficial, and that's not who I am - that's just the surface, it's just the beginning of who I am. For me, [the album title] is kind of a double entendre, and it's more about... you're just seeing the surface, and you don't know much about me."[3]

Montag described Superficial to People as "a fun, empowering mix that you could really dance to,"[1] elaborating to PopEater that she felt that "[there was] so much darkness in the world right now, I just wanted to bring some light and some fun into it."[3]

Music structure and lyrics

The album is of the dance-pop genre, incorporating elements of synthpop in its production and beats. It makes heavy use of Auto-tune to alter Montag's voice.[4]

First track, "Look How I’m Doin" is a kiss-off to a former flame, while "Blackout" is an ode to her husband, Spencer Pratt with lyrics like, "black out the satellite and be my lone star."[4] The lyrics on the album are decidedly edgy and sexy, with the song "I'll Do It" boasting a lyric, "come eat my panties off of me."[3]

Release and reception

The album was released on January 11, 2010[1] and sold 658 copies in its first week of release while the songs logged a total of 6,000 downloads.[5] One single, "Superficial", has been released from the album. It has failed to chart. Another song, "More Is More", had debuted at number fifty on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart in June 2009.[6] Before that, Montag had released "Look How I'm Doin'", "Blackout", "Overdosin'" and promotional single "Body Language" was released as digital downloads as well.

Kieran Layton of The Pitt News gave Superficial a D rating, saying that the album "[was] chock full of poorly produced, synthesized, and — worst of all — instantly forgettable tracks that are mildly irritating at best, but are usually insufferable."[4]
