IGS Energy, also known as Interstate Gas Supply, Inc., is America's largest independent retail supplier of natural gas, serving over 800,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois.[1][2][3] The company was founded in 1989. IGS Energy employs over 175 people at its headquarters in Dublin, Ohio.[4] IGS Energy has an A+ rating from the central Ohio Better Business Bureau. [5].

Natural Gas Residential Choice Programs

IGS Energy is a leading participant in Natural Gas Choice residential programs in several states in the midwestern and northeastern parts of the United States. Residential choice programs allow residential consumers and other small volume gas users to purchase natural gas from someone other than their traditional utility company. Before Natural Gas Choice, natural gas customers were required to purchase natural gas from their traditional utility. With Natural Gas Choice programs, customers can either purchase from their natural gas utility or choose to receive their gas supply from non-utility Choice suppliers. Often independent Natural Gas Choice suppliers can offer natural gas prices at less than the utility price. Also, Choice suppliers have the ability to offer certain products that utilities cannot including fixed rate pricing that gives customers the ability to lock in a natural gas rate for an extended period of time.[6]

Particiaption in Residential Choice Programs

In 2008 customer participation in residential choice progams throughout the United States reached an all time high.[7] IGS Energy's largest customer base for residential choice is in the state of Ohio. More than 40 percent of the state's residential natural gas customers were participating in choice programs as of September 2008. Currently, IGS Energy offers to supply natural gas to customers in the service territories of all the major Ohio natural gas utilities, including Columbia Gas of Ohio, Duke Energy of Ohio, Dominion East Ohio Gas, and Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio.[8] Several of Ohio's natural gas utilities auction off 100% of the gas supply to companies like IGS Energy. These utilities include Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio and Dominion East, Ohio. Columbia Gas of Ohio was granted authority by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to auction its gas supply responsibilities to independent gas suppliers such as IGS Energy.[9]. Columbia's first auction took place on February 24, 2010 and resulted in customers paying significantly less for natural gas than Columbia's average natural gas price for the years 2002-2009. [10]

Sponsorships

IGS Energy is a sponsor of major professional sports teams including the Cleveland Browns and the Columbus Blue Jackets. As part of the Blue Jackets sponsorship IGS Energy is known for its radio-controlled blimp that flies in the air above the crowd in Nationwide Arena between periods and drops player autographed merchandise and other popular prizes to the fans.[11][12][13] FOX Sports also provides a TV post-game show for the Blue Jackets that is sponsored by IGS Energy.[14] IGS Energy also sponsors the "Columbus Blue Jackets: A Season to Remember", a 30 minute recap of the Blue Jackets first playoff season that runs on Fox Sports Ohio.[15] IGS Energy is also a sponsor of the Dublin Irish Festival.[16]

New headquarters and Clean Energy Projects

IGS Energy is constructing a new two building campus for its employees in Dublin, Ohio. The building will be LEED certified and be completed in 2010.[17] The buildings will be a four-story, 100,000-square-foot (9,300 m2) facility with underground and surface parking. The company also intends to construct a three-story, 75,000-square-foot (7,000 m2) building adjacent to the first building on the 16 acres (65,000 m2) site.[18] Dublin is providing IGS with grants and incentives worth up to US$805,000 over the course of eight years, beginning in 2010. IGS Energy's current office building is also located in Dublin, Ohio. An additional 50 workers not on IGS Energy's payroll staff a call center for IGS Energy customers in the leased offices across the street from the current building.[19] IGS has received funds from the Federal Government's Clean Energy Transportation Fund to invest in compressed natural gas vehicles.[20] IGS also has revieved a $261,089 grant from federal stimulus money to install a solar photovoltaic system on its corporate office building.[21]
