Drake (portrayed by Drake Bell) is depicted as an easygoing, popular and self-absorbed teenager. Although he often appears unintelligent, his under-achievement seems to be caused by laziness and he's been known to act before he thinks. Drake has great interest in music; he plays the electric guitar in a band throughout the series and likes all forms of music, his favorite being rock music. Drake is usually good at getting what he wants. He has a lot of success with girls and much of the comedy is his effortless ability to get dates. Drake had felt embarrassed about his new stepbrother at first, but has grown to accept Josh more. Despite his selfishness and laziness, Drake still remains a likable character and redeems himself by doing the right thing. In 2010 Drake Bell made an appearance in iCarly's episode iBloop which stars his Drake & Josh co-star Miranda Cosgrove. He reprised his role as Drake Parker to make an appearance in the episode, during which he seems to have stepped into the alternate fictional universe of iCarly where he recognises Cosgrave's character as Megan Parker and follows by asking the whereabouts of Josh and the rest of his family.

Josh (portrayed by Josh Peck) is the educationally successful one, although he is not even close to being the socially successful one. He had a job for the school newspaper as Miss Nancy in Season 1. Unlike Drake, he usually stresses over school a lot and uses his common sense. Despite his good character, Josh is ironically prone to bad luck. Josh has a job at the Premiere movie theater, where he gets an average number of customers. He loves his job and has had hopes of becoming assistant manager. For a while, he has had very little luck with girls. Later, he begins to date Mindy Crenshaw, who was an academic rival. His hobbies are playing video games, cooking, and performing magic tricks. He usually suffers expense from Drake's carefree behavior, but the brothers somehow complete each other. Later in the series, Josh becomes more popular and gains better luck. He was always considered overweight, but suggestively lost a large amount of weight throughout the series.

Megan (portrayed by Miranda Cosgrove) is Drake's sassy, mischievous and "evil" little sister and Josh's stepsister, who takes after him in the worst ways. She constantly pulls pranks on Drake and Josh, and enjoys seeing them suffer. Drake and Josh have tried to foil her plans and convince their parents that she's evil but they always fail. Megan is always one step ahead. The fact that she's a little girl makes it impossible for anyone to believe Drake and Josh when they blame her for their misfortunes, a major running joke in the show, though she does get in trouble at one point. She seems to harbor sadistic personality disorder, admitting that she gets a feeling of gratification of some sort when torturing Drake and Josh. She loves them deep down, although she rarely admits it. She finally did show her love to them in the episode "Megan's First Kiss" by kissing both of them on the cheek. But she will also blame the brothers if she does something wrong or bad and almost always gets away with it. In later seasons Megan annoys her step-father by calling him "Walter" to which he responds "when did she start..?" and then someone interrupting him. In rare cases, Drake and Josh are successful in got advantage of Megan, but she always turns the tables at the end.

Walter (portrayed by Jonathan Goldstein) is Josh's father and Megan and Drake's stepfather. He is a meteorologist for a local TV news program in San Diego, but he is often wrong about the weather (mostly 100% of the time he's wrong). Walter is often clumsy, out of date, even seemingly empty-headed (for example, he believed Titanic to be "just a movie" and not real, thought the word touché to be pronounced 'toosh', and thought the word capisce to be pronounced capise). As a result, he lacks the respect of his stepchildren, Drake and Megan (they refuse to call him "Dad" in most episodes and instead calls him by his first name, which stepchildren commonly do). He is also quite clueless in regards to Megan's pranks which have caused Drake and Josh a lot of punishments, although in seasons 3 and 4, Walter slowly begins to notice Megan's evil ways. A running gag involves a rivalry between him and Bruce Winchill, an unseen weatherman from another station. He hates that Winchill is so popular, as he is always right with his predictions, and forbids use of Winchill's name in the house.

Audrey Parker-Nichols

Audrey (portrayed by Nancy Sullivan) is the mother of Drake and Megan and the stepmother of Josh. She, too, upsets Walter because of her preference to Bruce Winchill, his rival weatherman. She is usually telling the boys to try not to be so immature. Because Walter is unable to discipline Drake and Josh, she usually has to punish the boys. Her profession was never specified in the series but is assumed that she is a house wife.

Recurring characters

Craig Ramirez and Eric Blonowitz

Craig (portrayed by Alec Medlock) and Eric (portrayed by Scott Halberstadt) are two stereotypical "nerdy" honor students that are always being exploited by Drake, mostly due to his hare-brained schemes. Drake often mixes their names. They appear a few times in Seasons 1 and 2, but appear more frequently in Season 3. Eric left for Puerto Rico in the episode "Dance Contest," even though the episode was set before "Really Big Shrimp" which had both Craig and Eric (possibly due to that the movie premiered before the episode). They are similar to and loosely based on Cecily and Gwendolyn Pigeon from The Odd Couple, such as the characters' names always get mixed up by the sloppiest protagonist Drake/Oscar.

Mindy Crenshaw

Mindy (portrayed by Allison Scagliotti) was introduced in the episode Honor Council as Josh's rival at school; in fact, she enjoyed reminding Josh that she had beat him in the science fair for five straight years. Despite this, she eventually became Josh's girlfriend. Though they broke up in Season 4's "Mindy Loves Josh," they get back together in Really Big Shrimp. She is loosely based on Frances Unger from The Odd Couple since her relationships with Josh during the third and fourth seasons are similar to the relationship between Frances and Felix Unger, who were both a married couple that eventually divorced due to their major differences. Mindy despises Drake, often calling him an underachevier due to his poor performance in school; the feeling is mutual, as Mindy framed Drake for something she herself did, almost getting him suspended, though he accepts her relationship with Josh, saying he doesn't like half the girls he dates. Mindy and Josh later start dating. In the episode Mindy Loves Josh she tells Josh that she loves him. Josh freaks out and tells Drake. Drake tells him that this is all a plan to take his mind of the competition which is coming after some time. Josh believes in Drake and wins the competition. Later he says to Mindy that she should be ashamed of herself then Mindy tells Josh that she let him win on purpose because she felt bad when Josh loses. She later proves to Josh that her project was way better than Josh. Josh gives the first prize to her and says sorry to her. Then they both break up and move on. In the episode Eric Punches Drake when her cousin comes to town Josh thinks that he is her boyfriend and feels jealous. She later comes to Josh and explains then they both start kissing. Josh says to her that 'We are still broken-up right?' she answers 'Definitely'. Then they both continue kissing. In the TV special Really Big Shrimp she and Josh get back together.

Helen Ophelia Dubois-Baxter

Helen (portrayed by Yvette Nicole Brown) is the manager at the Premiere theater (a movie theater where Josh [and formerly Drake] has a job), connected to the Premiere Galleria, a mall. She is known for her intimidation factor, due to her loud voice and orders for her employees. She adores Drake but hates Josh despite the hard work he puts in at the theater. She also starred in a hit television show as a child, called "Happy Times" (a parody of the classic 1970s sitcoms Happy Days and Good Times). Though Yvette Nicole Brown plays Helen normally, Frances Callier filled in for her and portrayed her in the episode "Little Diva". She became married to Buzz Baxter in the episode "Really Big Shrimp", but divorced him some time before Merry Christmas, Drake and Josh after five weeks.

"Crazy" Steve

Steve (portrayed by Jerry Trainor who also plays Spencer Shay in iCarly) is an employee at the Premiere movie theater. He is responsible for giving Josh the job offer in the theater when he quits, however, he was somehow rehired back into the theater during the later seasons and became a regular on the show. He is hard working and pretty calm at times; however, once someone (usually Josh) criticizes his work or does something he hates, he loses his mind and yells at this situation. This is shown in Really Big Shrimp when Mindy Crenshaw, whom Helen hired to be assistant manager while she was preparing for her wedding, scheduled Steve to work on a Monday, not knowing that Monday was his bad day. When this happens, he does not calm down until She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain is sung by Josh and he gets a drink of milk (usually served warm). The song may calm him down because of his father. It is likely Steve had a rough childhood with his father abusing him. In the television movie Really Big Shrimp, he is able to vacuum the floor by thinking of the stains on the floor as his father. The only set of clothing he seems to have is his Premiere uniform. His personality is similar to the Dick Shawn character Sylvester Marcus from It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

Gavin Mitchell

Gavin (portrayed by Jake Farrow) works with Josh at the Premiere, and has a mullet-like haircut (in Season 4's "Who's Got Game" he got a perm). A running gag throughout the series involved Helen asking him to tell Josh to clean something unusual in the theater. He then cleans up the mess himself - telling Josh "I got it." He also has a crush on Drake's mother. He can apparently get away with anything at work, like taking a nap on the roof. He first appeared in "Driver's License" and made a final appearance in Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh.

Mrs. Hayfer

Mrs. Alice/Linda Hayfer (portrayed by Julia Duffy) is Drake and Josh's English teacher who adores Josh (due to his hard-working personality) but she hates Drake because of his consistently poor performance in school. In fact, her catchphrase is "I hate you, Drake," with Drake responding, "I know." Mrs. Hayfer has a daughter named Kelly, who Drake briefly dated, much to the discontent of Mrs. Hayfer. In one episode, she comes into the classroom to find her car parked where Drake and Josh's seats were originally, and she accuses Drake of putting the car there; but in the end, her star student, Mindy, was the real culprit.

Dr. Glazer

Dr. Jeff Glazer (portrayed by Roark Critchlow) is a doctor who lives across the street from Drake and Josh. He is always called on whenever a serious emergency happens at their house. Although he always seems kind while performing medical procedures for Drake and Josh, he always leaves the two brothers with a ridiculously high bill for his services (he once charged $100 for diagnosing a sheep as pregnant after she had her baby, and an extra $50 not to tell Drake and Josh's parents, and charged $300 for diagnosing Drake's facial rash). He first appeared in "The Bet" and last appeared in "Sheep Thrills".

Bruce Winchill

Bruce Winchill is a weather-man who works for Walter's competition's news station. He is never seen on the show, but is mentioned from time to time. He is described by Megan and Audrey as having good-looking hair and is hated by Walter so much that at times he orders his family never to mention his name in the house. Walter lost the Weather Man Award at the "News-ies" to him, because Winchill's forecasts were 100% accurate, far more accurate than his.

Leah

Leah (portrayed by Cathy Shim) is a Asian Premiere employee who is really scared of "Crazy" Steve and sometimes helps Josh. She warned Josh that he was eating Crazy Steve's enchilada, then ran out in panic when Crazy Steve walked in.

Minor characters

Grammy Nichols

Grammy Nichols (portrayed by Randee Heller) is Josh's grandmother and Walter's mother. She loves Josh and Megan, but she hates Drake. In her only appearance from season 1, she expressed anger towards Drake when he decided to go to a concert even though his parents said he was not allowed. Then at the end of the episode, Grammy shows affection toward Drake when he attempts to tell his parents the truth.

Jackie

Jackie (portrayed by Robin Sydney) is obsessed with Drake and appeared in a total of 4 episodes in the entire series. She would come into the scene randomly (usually at the end, specifically when something positive happens in Drake's favor), and then shout hysterically, "I love you, Bye!" This was considered to be one of the several running gags of the series. Whenever she would appear randomly, and run off, Drake would say, Who is she?

Trevor

Trevor (portrayed by Taran Killam) is Drake's absent-minded friend and Scottie's brother. Although he appeared in 1 episode ("Dune Buggy"), he was mentioned several times throughout the series, and his voice was heard on the phone in "Josh Runs into Oprah".

Robbie Bernstein

Robbie Bernstein (portrayed by Ryan Alvarez) is another nerd who works for the school's paper. He appeared in 3 episodes.

Lucy

Lucy (portrayed by Gabrielle Christian) is another ex-girlfriend of Drake. She was first introduced in "Girl Power". In the episode, she admitted that she was tougher than Drake. Although Drake disagreed, Lucy decided that the two of them should fight. Drake was hesitant about fighting her. Lucy is considered to be a tom boy. She returned in "The Storm".

"Hot" Liza Tupper

Liza Tupper (portrayed by Sofia Sokolov) is one of Drake's dates. She appeared in "Playing the Field" where Drake dated her just to make his ex-girlfriend, Tori jealous. Liza is a people person, she adores animals and her dad is in the navy. She was mentioned again in "Dr. Phillis Show", where Drake and Josh told Dr. Phyllis about her, not realizing that Liza is Dr. Phyllis' daughter. Phyllis then goes into a rage and attacks Drake for using Liza.

Dr. Phyllis

Dr. Phyllis Tupper (portrayed by Gabrielle Carteris) is a fictional talk show host and the female equivalent to Dr. Phil. In one episode, Drake and Josh were guests on her show; talking about their constant bickering. She is the mother of Liza and attacked Drake on her show for saying that Liza was a bad kisser and dumb.

Melissa ("Wendy")

Melissa (portrayed by Alyson Stoner), although better known by her friends including Megan as Wendy, is a little girl from Josh's Campfire Troop who is obsessed with Drake. She is a huge fan of his music; owning all Drake merchandise (a shirt with Drake's photo, CDs, etc). Wendy irritated Drake and the other Campfire kids. In the end he was grateful that he had a big fan like Wendy, despite how young she was. She appeared in "Number One Fan".

Yooka

Yooka (portrayed by Anastasia Baranova) is Josh's E-pal friend from the fictional land of "Yudonia", appearing in "Were Married". She was temporally married to Drake, at a friendship ceremony planned by Josh.

Michelle

Michelle (portrayed by Kate Lang Johnson) is an intelligent, brainy girl, who is a member of the Academic Club and went out with Drake. She liked Drake for the kind of person he was, regardless of how much he knows or the grades he gets in school. She made an appearance in "Smart Girl".

Drew and Jerry

Drew (portrayed by James Immekus) and Jerry (portrayed by Stephen Markarian) were Drake and Josh's look-alikes. Drew linked up with Josh and Drake linked up with Jerry, trying to make one another jealous. They appeared in one episode, entitled "Drew and Jerry". At the end of the episode they got their own show after a talent agent saw them doing funny things at the Premiere with Drake and Josh.

Clayton

Clayton (portrayed by Josh Sussman) is one of the nerdy kids at school. He has talking problems where he mumbles and no one can understand what he is saying. He is even nerdier than Craig and Eric, or so they think. He appeared in a total of 2 episodes.

Papa Nichols

Papa Nichols (portrayed by Vernon Roberts) is Walter's grandfather, Grammy's father and Josh's great-grandfather and a World War II veteran. He was thinking that Craig & Eric were Germans after he had surgeries. He only appeared in "The Demonator". He is Drake and Megan's step great-grandfather.

Corey

Corey (portrayed by Christian Vandal) was Megan's boyfriend. He split up with her after 7 weeks when he discovered that her brothers were crazy. He reunited with her later and Josh discovers that Corey was cheating. Megan splits up with him after Josh discovering that he had a second girlfriend named Monica (played by Kelly Heyer). He punches Drake & Josh and he knew Kung Fu. He gets arrested by the police in the alternative ending of the episode. He only appeared in "Megan's First Kiss".

Drake's Band

Drake's Band was the band which Drake is the frontman.

The members

  • Scottie (portrayed by Johnny Lewis, 2004-2005) is a former drummer of Drake's band. He was considered to be unintelligent, according to Drake and the other band members. He appeared in 4 episodes of season 1 only. He got himself and his band members arrested at a concert because he photocopied their tickets (episode: "Grammy"). He, Rina and Paul were never seen again after that episode. Scottie is Trevor's brother.
  • Rina (portrayed by Molly Orr, 2004-2005) is the former bassist of Drake's band, both appearing in 4 episodes from season 1. She and Paul caused Drake peer pressure in the episode "Grammy", when they had concert tickets to Rock Shock, the concert that Drake was not allowed to attend. Scottie got them arrested because he photocopied their tickets. Rina, Paul and Scottie were never seen again after that.
  • Paul (portrayed by Jeremy Ray Valdez, 2004-2005) is the former guitarist of Drake's band, appearing in 4 episodes from season 1. • Gary (portrayed by Dan Mott, 2005-2008) is the goofy and self absorbed drummer of Drake's band. He has a tattoo of a foot on his chest and likes to wear shirts with pandas on them. He only appeared in "The Storm".
  • Julio (portrayed by Shiloh Fernandez, 2005-2008) is the bassist in Drake's band. He only appeared in "The Storm", but was mentioned in Josh runs into Oprah.
