McIntosh High School is a public secondary school located in Peachtree City, Georgia. The school, governed by the Fayette County School System, was named a Georgia School of Excellence in 2000. In 2007, it was named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.[1] On April 1, 2008, McIntosh was briefly featured on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams during a segment regarding high school graduation rates.[2]

History

McIntosh High School, named for William McIntosh, was opened in early December 1981. It was barely completed at the time, with no gym and a dirt parking lot. The school is now known for its famous parking lot.

Student life

McIntosh has strong athletic programs in soccer and volleyball which won state championships in 2007, dance which won a state championship in 2006, and cross country which won a state championship in 2005. The newly added lacrosse program was state runner-up in 2008, they lost in double overtime to the Lovett Lions. Track, tennis, dance, and other sports have done well in previous years. McIntosh also has one of the best academic records of any public school in Georgia, including the highest SAT scores in Fayette County for 2005.[3] . In 2008, McIntosh's ACT scores were reported as the highest in Fayette County and the 3rd highest in the state of Georgia.[4] In 2008 and 2009, the McIntosh High School Varsity Academic Bowl team won the state championship.

McIntosh offers a wide variety of clubs and extracurricular activities, including the drama club, International Thespian Society, debate team, chess club, Beta club, Key club, Academic Bowl, Latin club, foreign language clubs, and a Literary Club "Voices" that publishes an annual Lit-Mag. The National English Honor Society even hosts a coloring club to support de-stressing among students who take the vigorous course loads McIntosh has to offer. However both automotive technology and construction have been phased out of the McIntosh curriculum, despite having the facilities to accommodate both. McIntosh is very famous for its golf-cart parking lot.

The AP program is extensive and many students participate in dual enrollment through the ACCEL Program.

Additions
