Kanimozhi Karunanidhi (Template:Lang-ta)(born 1968 in Chennai), is a Tamil poet, journalist and politician. She is a Member of Parliament, representing Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha.[1]Kanimozhi is the daughter of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi and former drama artist Rajathi Ammal. Kanimozhi is a close friend of Indian Telecommunication Minister Raja and helped him return to the cabinet post in spite of the opposition that Mr. Raja faced[2]. She prefers to be called Kanimozhi. [3]

She belongs to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and is the chief of the DMK’s wing for Art, Literature and Rationalism. Her half-brothers M.K. Azhagiri is the Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers and M. K. Stalin is the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Personal life

Kanimozhi was a student of Presentation Convent, Church Park in Chennai and later did her Masters in Economics in Ethiraj College for Women from Madras University. She married Athiban Bose a Sivakasi based businessman in 1989. Later, after divorce, she married G. Aravindan a Singapore based Tamil literary figure, through mutual love of Tamil literature on August 21, 1997. She has one son.He is hailed for literature works[4][5] She has deep love for the Tamil language in particular Sangam Literature.[6].

Career

Kanimozhi was a sub editor for The Hindu, and editor in charge of Kungumam, a Tamil weekly magazine. She was also Columnist and conducted programmes in Vijay TV. She has also worked as a features editor for a Singapore based Tamil newspaper called Tamil Murasu. She has also written Tamil poetry and translated Tamil poetry into English of other poets. Her literary works have been translated into various languages like English, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu.

Job Fairs

She also spearheads the DMK's efforts to organize Job Fairs, under the auspices of 'Kalaignar - 85' across rural Tamil Nadu to facilitate employment opportunities for young people in smaller cities, towns and villages. Through such Job Fairs, she hopes to bring together companies (employers) and the candidates (job-seekers). Begun as a small employment drive to mark the birthday of DMK President Kalaignar Karunanidhi in June 2008 at Kariyapatti (a village in Virudhunagar District) Job Fairs have provided jobs to about 70,000 unemployed youth spread across five districts. ‘Kalaignar 85’ travelled to Nagercoil (August 2008), Vellore (September 2008), Udhagamandalam (October 2008),Virudhunagar (November 2008) and Cuddalore (November 2009). She plans to conduct similar job fairs all over Tamil Nadu. [7]

Other Interests

She is strong supporter of Pan Tamil issues in particular Sri Lankan Tamils.[8] In protest against killing of Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka,[9] Kanimozhi submitted her post-dated resignation to her father and party chief Karunanidhi on October 14 which is widely perceived to be a sham for the sake of public posturing. [10]

She has conducted a two-day 'leadership workshop' for women panchayat leaders which covered the role of women in public life and politics. Leadership skills, Constitution and the administrative structure in the Union government were also covered. She plans to conduct similar workshops at various places across the state. She is also interested in the welfare of differently-abled people and the transgenders.

In 2005, she along with Karthi Chidambaram, started a portal supporting free speech. [11]
