Waves cultural festival
Waves is the annual cultural festival of Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani – Goa Campus[1], India. It is generally spread over three days in October. WAVES is attended by participants from all over Goa and India.[2]

Waves has featured unique themes such as " Urban Chaos", "Nirvana-The state of statelessness". This year's theme is Viva La Vidawhich literally translates into "Long Live Life".[3]

Waves started as an Intra college festival in 2005. Featuring performances from some of the biggest names in the entertainment and showbiz industry, The list of past luminaries include DJ Suketu, Indian Ocean, Vidya Balan, KK, DJ Ivan, Parikrama, Sudarshan Patnaik, Rainbow Bridge, Tarla Dalal,Shruti Hasan Nikhil Chinapa etc.[4]

Popular Contests
The events most looked forward to include the Pro-Nites, where professionals are invited to perform. The venue is usually in front of the Institute's B Wing, affectionately called the "B-Dome".[5] Among the most popular pro-nites is the DJ Nite where past performers include DJ Suketu and DJ Ivan. The second and third nights feature eminent personalities from the world of entertainment.

"Fash P" is the festival's popular fashion contest, as participants vie for top honours with their own creations and designs. Past judges include popular Bollywood actress Vidya Balan. It also served as a launching pad to the popular Indian television show MTV Splitsvilla.[6] at Waves Summer 2009.
"Mr & Miss Waves" , which is held on the last day's evening, is a talent contest that sees representatives of participating institutions display their skills in an effort to win the prize.[7]
Sea Rock, features semi professional bands from around the country. Indian rock band Parikrama headlined Sea Rock in Waves Winter 2009. Other performers include Slain (Opening Band for Iron Maiden and Winners of NLS Strawberry Fields, and IIT-B Livewire). [8]
Waves Winter 2009 also saw a prom night, and it is expected that the subsequent editions will also feature the same, considering th popularity that the event generated.[9]
Workshops

Waves has played host to a number of unique workshops over the years. These include ones on dance - Hip hop, Waltz, Salsa - Film making, Cookery, Photography, Numerology and Tarot Card Reading, Ambigram, Clay modelling, Handwriting, Ceramic Art, Pottery, Hypnotism, Tye n Dye and lots more. Prominent personalities who have been associated include Kishore Namit Kapoor, Tarla Dalal, Taj Resorts and many others.

Pro Nites
The Professional Nights - or Pro Nites - at Waves has seen live performances from an artists such as DJ Suketu, Indian Ocean, KK, DJ Ivan, Parikrama, Rainbow Bridge, Nikhil Chinapa, Junkyard Groove, Evergreen, Fictitious Group (the winners of Boogie Woogie)etc. [10]
Other contests
Popular contests at Waves include a variety of disciplines. These include unique ones like Indian Rock, Cartooning, Press Corps, Mock Talk Show, Paintball, Zorbing,Six String Showdown, Blind Art, Stand Up comedy etc besides regular ones like JAM, Skime, Duo Dance,Solo Dance Photography, Streetplay, Quiz and lots more.

Waves 2005
A modest beginning,Waves 2005 was an intra college(inter hostel) event of the institute. “Ride The Waves”-the theme for the event was the precursor to Zephyr, the annual inter hostel fest. [11]

Waves 2006
”Take the plunge”-the theme of Waves ’06 featured a sequence of cultural and literary events. The festival was now being organized at an all-Goa level.[12][13]
Waves 2007
With the theme "Urban Chaos", Waves 2007 became the biggest cultural festival in Goa.[14]Performers included DJ Sasha from Bangalore, Bhayanak Maut (finalists of Channel V Launch Pad) from Mumbai, MotherJane from Cochin and the MTV Roadies.
Waves 2008
With the theme " Nirvana-The State of Statelessness" [15], Waves 2007 saw participation from colleges outside Goa.Nikhil Chinapa belted out popular numbers on DJ Nite, which set the trend for the "Pro Nites" that are a regular feature today. [16]

Waves Summer 2009
WAVES Summer 2009 was organized in March 2009.[17]. Highlights include performances by Indian Ocean and Parikrama, besides the appearance of the MTV Splitsvilla finalists Varun and Priyanka to judge the fashion show. There were also a large number of workshops on offer. DJ Ivan from Bangalore brought to the campus a Masquerade Party.

Waves Winter 2009
Held in November 2009, the festival featured KK and DJ Suketu besides Sea Rock. The theme of the festival "Winter Was Never This Hot" . New events included Paintball and Zorbing, and prizes included offers at prestigious acting schools like the Kishore Namit Academy in Mumbai, roles in films by PNC, Pritish Nandy’s famous Bollywood production house which has created movies like Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Jhankaar Beats), free recording by Xion Media Labs, a chance to perform at the hallowed Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai besides others.

Waves 2010 will be held on October 14-16 2010. The theme for the edition is Viva La Vida.
