Plot

Amano Ichigo is incredibly clumsy and can't seem to do anything right except for eating cakes. When she stumbles upon a Sweets Festival, she meets Henri-sensei, who acknowledges her ability of taste and invites her to transfer to St. Marie Academy to become a pâtissière. Ichigo has trouble adjusting initially, but with the help of the three Sweets Princes, their Sweets Spirits, and Vanilla, she gains the confidence and skill to work toward becoming a pâtissière.

Characters

Main Characters

Ichigo Amano (天野いちご, Amano Ichigo)
Voiced by: Aoi Yūki
Age: 14
Birthday: January 5
Height: 152 cm
Blood type: O
An optimistic, lively (but very clumsy) middle schooler who loves sweets. Her mother ignored her for many years for having no talent (compared to her younger sister, Natsume, who plays the piano very well). Because she has an incredible palate that is able to immediately tell what ingredients are used in different sweets and who made the ingredients, she is spotted by Henri Lucas, a genius pâtissier, during a Sweets Festival. Therefore, she transfers to St. Marie Academy in order to train to become a pâtissière like her grandmother. Ichigo is also known for her huge appetite for cakes; she believes that people actually have a second stomach specifically made for them. She has also stated that she won several cake-eating contests in the past. As the story progresses, Ichigo improves her talent as a pâtissière and gains new friends and rivals along the way. Ichigo wins the hearts of almost everyone with her hard work and love for pastries, including all the Sweets Princes. She also seem to have a crush on Henri Lucas (maybe her first love) who she first met at the Sweets Festa. Though, there are hints that she is developing feelings for Kashino. Her dream is to create sweets that makes people smile.
Makoto Kashino (樫野 真, Kashino Makoto)
Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto
Age: 14
Birthday: April 18
Height: 160 cm
Blood type: B
One of the "Sweets Princes" of the school who specializes in chocolate.Others tend to tease him for his height because he is the shortest out of the Sweets Princes. He comes from a prestigious family of doctors, who do not approve of him wanting to become a patisserie. Due to this fact his family gave him one condition to attend St. Marie and that is to always be at the top of his class. Kashino is unsociable, straightforward, easily angered and has a picky character; except for Andou he has both ignored both Hanabusa's and the Sweet Spirit's Friendship when they met and has been mostly cold towards Ichigo due to her clumsiness and happy-go-lucky personality. He takes pride in handling chocolate and is aiming to be a top-class patissier He greatly admires his uncle (who is a chocolatier) and spent alot of time in his shop when he was little, which inspired him to study to become a patissiere,

It's also stated that he is a sadistic hottie by his Sweets Spirit, Chocolat. He has terrible handwriting but is a very good drawing and he has a picture of someone or something drawn in his notebook. He has terrible sleeping posture, so his hair is always messed up in the morning. He spends 30 minutes in front of the mirror every morning fixing his hair. Then due to what is being called accident by Chocolat we learn he has a cute little mole on his right butt cheek. Her reason for knowing this is because she went to go get him when he was in the shower so she saw it by accident. He has strong feelings toward Ichigo and always worry about her, despite their constant bickering. He often shows jealousy whenever other boys express interest in Ichigo or vice versa.

Satsuki Hanabusa (花房五月, Hanabusa Satsuki)
Voiced by: Tsubasa Yonaga
Age: 14
Birthday: October 2
Height: 167 cm
Blood type: AB
One of the "Sweets Princes" of the school who specializes in candy sculptures and flower-based cakes. Hanabusa's dream is to work with his mother, who excels at Japanese flower arrangement and who is one of the teachers at St. Marie Academy. His father was a horticulturist who specialized in roses and died in a car accident several years before the story takes place. The bottle of rose water Hanabusa keeps is a memento of his father. Ever since his father died, Hanabusa felt that he should be kind to his mother and women. As a result, Hanabusa always centered on roses, and is extremely nice to all females (to the point of being a borderline perpetual flirt). He also seems to be a narcissist and is heavily concerned for his appearance; for example, Café, his Sweets Spirit, stated that Hanabusa needs more than an hour to get ready for school in the mornings. Though he says he likes all girls, Hanabusa tends to pay more attention to Ichigo.
Sennosuke Andou (安堂千乃介, Andō Sennosuke)
Voiced by: Shinya Hamazoe
Age: 14
Birthday: February 25
Height: 175 cm
Blood type: A
One of the "Sweets Princes" of the school who specializes in Japanese sweets. Andou's dream is to open his own shop (next to his family's Yumetsuki confectionery and also a branch in Paris) that sells a blend of Eastern and Western sweets. Andou is the eldest of five siblings, and he often goes to help at his family's shop during holidays and weekends. He is a childhood friend of Kashino and calls him "Ma-chan" (manga) or "Ma-kun" (anime). Andou is always calm, reliable, and tries to reason with everyone, acting somewhat like an older brother to Team Ichigo. Andou cares about Caramel (his Sweets Spirit) like a little sister, and he is always overjoyed whenever Caramel does something nice for him. He looks out for Ichigo and tends to worry about her a lot.

Sweets Spirits

Vanilla (バニラ, Banira)
Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu
Ichigo's sweets spirit who specializes in vanilla. Often labeled as a Spartan, Vanilla's attitude is quite fiery. She generally fights with Chocolat, though they don't seem to actually hate each other. Several people tend to call her pudgy. Ichigo and Vanilla consider each other to be best friends, and she is loyal to her partner. She often plays a big part in cheering Ichigo up whenever Ichigo feels discouraged. Her sweets spirit magic can decorate plates, make everybody shrink to the same size as the Sweets Spirits, or fill the entire room with a pastry's scent. She can also translate sweet spirit language into Japanese.
Chocolat (ショコラ, Shokora)
Voiced by: Yuri Yamaoki
Kashino's sweets spirit who is skilled in chocolate. Chocolat has a competitive spirit but is easily frightened. She is a classic example of a tsundere character. Although she appears to dislike Ichigo, she actually cares for her and helps her whenever needed. Unlike the other Sweets Spirits, Chocolat sleeps in her very own bed.
Caramel (キャラメル, Kyarameru)
Voiced by: Mayu Iino
Andou's sweets spirit who is useful with caramel. Although Caramel is the eldest out of Team Ichigo's Sweets Spirits, she is clumsy like Ichigo and tends to cry a lot. She commonly ends her sentences with desu. Café states that she has a terrible sense of direction. She considers Andou to be her big brother. Her sweets magic allows her to make pastry pictures appear to show someone what the sweets look like.
Café (カフェ, Kafe)
Voiced by: Misawa Sachika
Hanabusa's sweets spirit who is good with coffee. Café is polite, smart, and very calm. He looks up to Hanabusa and sees him as his senpai. Café can make extremely bitter coffee as a potent way of making Team Ichigo more awake.
Honey (ハニー, Hani)
Voiced by: Eri Kitamura
Mari Tennouji's Sweet Spirit, who specializes with honey. She is mature, cool and calm. Even though her expression is always serious, she is very friendly and kind to everyone. She seems to have a slightly shocking and annoyed reaction when The Jerks called her Honey-Pig. She is very well respected among the Sweets Spirits to the point of calling her Honey-sama. Unlike the other Sweets Spirits, like most people would call them, she doesn't seem to be pudgy.

Honey has beautiful, long, wavy blonde hair with the front of her hair parted fairly in two and golden yellow eyes. Her wings are rather triangular unlike the others that are more round. She holds a crown on her head and she wears a brown and yellow striped dress, the bottom resembling slightly a gown with a white apron. She is seen wearing gloves and her shoes seem to also be yellow. Unlike the others, her wand-like utensil is a bee hive at the end instead of a spoon or a fork. She resembles her partner Mari Tennouji very much in both appearance and personality.

Marron (マロン, Maron)
Voiced by: Sayuri Yahagi
Miya's Sweets Spirit who likes to use chestnuts. Other Sweets Spirits note that Miya and her personalities are similar as both looks down on people a lot.

Supporting Characters

Henri Lucas (アンリ・リュカス)
Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio
Age: 26
Birthday: February 14
Height: 178 cm
Blood type: O
He is the grandchild of Marie Lucas who created St. Marie Academy to raise patisseries. St. Marie Academy is a confectionery school that founded 100 years ago. There is a legend at the school, where if you see a sweets spirit's form your dream will be granted. Although he is only a lecturer at the Japanese branch, he is called a genius.Due to unknown circumstances, he transferred to Paris to teach at the school there before Ichigo moved to St. Marie in Japan. He later returns to judge the Cake Grand Prix. Henri is characterized as calm, collected, and handsome gentleman. He shows great interest in Ichigo and Tennouji as pâtissières and seems to favor both of them among all his students. Henri has an unknown Sweets Spirit. The Sweets Princes are jealous of the admiration Ichigo has for Henri-sensei. It is also stated that he is not only a "master of sweets", but also a "master of dance."
Mari Tennouji (天王寺麻里, Tennōji Mari)
Voiced by: Eri Kitamura
Age: 17
Birthday: November 2
Height: 165 cm
Blood type: A
One of Henri Lucas' favorite students. She is the daughter of a hotel owner and the Student Council President of the academy and known as the genius when it comes to pastry. Though she has been given many awards for her excellent work, she has stated that all of her medals and trophies are meaningless compared to the attention she wants from Henri Lucas. Tennouji constantly works very hard to improve her skills, regardless of her being the St. Marie Academy's top student. Her Sweets Spirit is Honey. She probably has feelings toward Henri-sensei as she has shown hints of jealousy towards Ichigo and is always looking for Henri-sensei's approval and praise. During the Cake Grand Prix in Japan, Henri gives Ichigo a higher grade than Tennouji.
Miya Koshiro (小城美夜, Koshiro Miya)
Voiced by: Sayuri Yahagi
Known as "Heiress" by other students, Miya is the daughter of the president of the famed "Château Seika" company which specializes in creating and delivering chocolates and cookies. She is a 3rd year middle school student and is the leader of Team Koshiro. She is very determined to get whatever she desires and as such, whenever she is in a pinch she relies heavily on her family's power and wealth to get what she wants (e.g. she bought the Andorra campus of St. Marie in order to compete in the World Cake Grand Prix). She also has a habit of ordering the highest quality ingredients to get her to win, in some cases, she even resorts to cheating. She has a very obsessive crush on Kashino to the point where she has memorabilia of him (e.g. a giant picture of him and statues and even a doll of him), and often dreams being together with him.
Rumi Kato (加藤留美, Katō Rumi)
Voiced by: Asumi Kodama
Ichigo's roommate and best friend at St. Marie Academy, who is in Group C. She has a long distance boyfriend named Takuya. Rumi always sticks up for Ichigo when she is bullied by other students and often cheers Ichigo's team on in the Cake Grand Prix. She speaks in an Osaka dialect.

Voiced by: Sugita Tomokazu
An Italian student from the main campus of St. Marie Academy, with dark-blue eyes and light-blue hair. He first met Ichigo and the Sweets Princes at the Paris Métro. During the World Cake Grand Prix, Rick is interested in Ichigo, which annoys the Sweets Princes. He has a Sweets Spirit named Basil.

Anime

The anime adaptation was accidentally announced in June 2009 by a listing from one of the card game series based on the manga.[3] The series began airing on October 4, 2009 on Yomiuri TV.[12] The series currently simulcasts on Crunchyroll with English subtitles.[4] The sweets in the series were all created by the Paris-based patissier Aoki Sadaharu.[13] A one episode side story, title Yumeiro Pâtissière Mune Kyun Tropical Island! (夢色パティシエール 胸キュントロピカルアイランド!, Yumeiro Patissiere: Heart-Racing Tropical Island!) will be shown at the "Natsu Doki– Ribon–kko Party 5" event for Ribon magazine in the summer of 2010.[14]

The series uses two pieces of theme music, one opening and one closing. The opening is Yume ni Yell! Patissiere (夢にエール!パティシエール♪, Yell For the Dream! Patissiere) and the ending is Ichigo no Mirakurūru (いちごのミラクルール, Ichigo's Miracle–le). The CD single for the two was released by the Columbia Music Entertainment on January 20, 2010 in a regular and limited edition. The limited edition comes with extra charms and costs ¥1,365, but is otherwise the same as the regular edition, which costs ¥1,050.[15][16] A soundtrack for the series was released on April 21, 2010, entitled Yumeiro Patissiere KiraKira ☆ Myūjikku (夢色パティシエール きらきら☆ミュージック, Yumeiro Patissiere SparkleSparkle ☆ Music).[17][18]

A second season called "Yumeiro Patissiere Professional" will start on October 3rd. It will take place several years later, when Ichigo is an adult.[19] The season will also add new characters.

Video Game

A Nintendo DS game was released based on the series on May 27, 2010. The game is entitled Yumeiro Patissiere: My Sweet Cooking (夢色パティシエールマイスイーツクッキング, Yumeiro Patishiēru Mai Suītsu Kukkingu) and was released by Konami.[20][21]

Card Game

A trading card game based on the manga was released in Japan by Konami during the serialization of the series. There are two different series, Sweets Deco Cards and My Sweets Cards.[3][22]

Cookbook

A cookbook for the series entitled "Yumeiro Patissiere Special Recipe Book: Oyako de Tsukuru Hajimete no Sweets" (夢色パティシエール スペシャルレシピブック 親子で作るはじめてのスイーツ) (ISBN 978-4-08-102082-9) was released by Shueisha Mook on December 1, 2009 for ¥1200.[23][24][25]

Reception

Carlos Santos of Anime News Network calls the anime "a baking-themed series so rife with clichés that it's hard to tell where the plagiarism stops and the actual show begins."[26] Other reviewers on the same site had slightly better opinions of the series though. Carl Kimlinger calls it "pure shojo fluff" and says that it is a "sugary little distraction that won't harm any sensibilities"[27] Theron Martin suggests either eating before or during viewing as the series is "undoubtedly one of the tastiest-looking series to come along in quite some time." Martin critiqued the art of the series however, saying "The dessert designs are unquestionably the visual highlight, as otherwise the artistry and technical merits are rather bland."[28] Summer Mullins also notes that the sweets are the best part of the animation, saying, "those detailed shots [of the sweets] highlight the fact that some of the animation is only so-so".[13]

As of May 11, 2010 Crunchyroll's website listed Yumeiro Patissiere with an overall ranking of 4.8 out of 5 stars, with a total of 1761 votes.[29]
